Leather. Zustand: Good. J M W Turner (illustrator). The result of time spent in France, this work showcases the talent of artist J M W Tuner, with written material by Leitch Ritchie. Three volumes of an original four volume set, missing volume I. Volume I contained the introduction by John Ruskin. Illustrated throughout with engravings taken from Turner's original paintings. Enlarged edition. J M W Turner was a Romantic painter. Born in 1775, he led a controversial life, fathering two daughters out of wedlock, living in poverty towards the ends of his life, and suffering with ill health. He died in 1851, and is buried in St Paul's Cathedral. Bookplate of 'Franciscan Central Library' to the front pastedown of each volume. Dated and collated using COPAC. No collation available for plates. The title page states that there should be sixty-one engravings across the four volumes. Only are 36 plates present. In a full cloth binding. Externally, sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Rubbing to the joints, front and rear boards, as well as to the extremities. Rubbing has caused cloth to lift, to the rear board of volume II. Tidemark to the front board of volume III, and to the rear board of volume II. With handling and rubbing marks to the front and rear board of each volume. Institutional bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers of each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages have some agetoning and the occasional spot. The tissue guard to each plate is present, though many are creased, with ageoting to the edges and the odd spot. Good. book.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes bound in one. lxii, 192 printed pages. 12 tissue guarded, fine, steel engraved plates after J.M.W.Turner. Pages are bright, with just some scattered instances of foxing. Upper hinges are cracked yet still remaining firmly bound. 24 x 32 cm. In publisher's green embossed cloth binding with slightly worn printed paper spine label. Corners with just some slight bumping. Extreme edges of lower corners very slightly stained, not affecting the pages within. In the late summer and autumn of 1832, Turner toured the coast, countryside, and urban settlements of northern France, focusing most of his attention on Paris and its satellites, and also on the picturesque banks of the River Seine as it meanders through Normandy. His immediate aim was to gather materials for which he had been commissioned to provide illustrations for the publisher Charles Heath, a two-volume account of a leisurely cruise up the Seine from Le Havre to Troyes as part of the series entitled Turner's Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833-5; in 1880, reissued as Rivers of France). At least two sketchbooks in the Turner Bequest ("Seine and Paris" and "Paris and Environs") are firmly attributed to this tour. This connection has been made primarily because their contents are closely related to the subsequent published illustrations.
