Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 64 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4) bound in original publisher's pictorial stapled wrappers. First edition. The Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence is one of the most popular, reputable, and deeply studied of all chess openings. Modern Chess Openings calls it the "Cadillac" or "Rolls-Royce" of chess openings. The opening is named after the Polish-Argentine grandmaster Miguel Najdorf, although he was not the first strong player to play the variation. Many players have relied on the Najdorf (notably Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov, although Kasparov would often transpose into a Scheveningen). The Najdorf begins: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 Black's 5.a6 aims to deny the b5-square to White's knights and light-square bishop while maintaining flexible development. If Black plays 5.e5?! immediately, then after 6.Bb5+! Bd7 (or 6.Nbd7 7.Nf5) 7.Bxd7+ Nbxd7 (or Qxd7) 8.Nf5, the knight on f5 is difficult to dislodge without concessions. Games in the Najdorf frequently feature opposite-side castling, where White castles long and both sides launch simultaneous attacks on their opponents' kings. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, old sticker residue to front cover else very good.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 38 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers, First edition. The Réti Opening is a hypermodern chess opening whose "traditional" or "classic method" begins with the moves: 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 White attacks Black's pawn from the flank, which may occasion 2.dxc4. White may couple this plan with a kingside fianchetto (g3 and Bg2) to create pressure on the light squares in the center. The opening is named after Czechoslovakian chess player Richard Réti (1889 1929). The opening is in the spirit of the hypermodernism movement that Réti championed, with the center being dominated from the wings rather than by direct occupation. If White fianchettoes both bishops, castles kingside, and refrains from occupying the center with pawns, the result may be described as the Réti System. Condition: Light edge wear else very good.

The small town of Bugojno in central Yugoslavia (now Bosnia) hosted five strong tournaments between 1978 and 1986. This tournament, however, was the first one. It was a Category 14 event that featured players of the old guard like Svetozar Gligoric, Borislav Ivkov and Robert E Byrne and pitted them against a younger generation that included Jan H Timman, Anthony J. Miles and Robert Huebner. The tournament ran from the 26th of February to the 16th of March and in the sixteen player field Anatoly Karpov and Boris Spassky emerged as the joint winners. For Spassky it was a victory to rank alongside wins such as the USSR Championship (1961), the USSR Zonal (1964) and the Second Piatigorsky Cup (1966). For Karpov it was an excellent dress rehearsal in his only other showing in 1978 before facing Korchnoi to defend the World Title in September. Timman came in a point behind the leaders. Ljubomir Ljubojevic and Mikhail Tal shared fourth with 8.5. Sixth was share as well with Vlastimil Hort and Bent Larsen with 8. Shared eight was Yuri S Balashov and Robert Huebner. Sole tenth was Anthony J. Miles with a score of 7. Borislav Ivkov and Lajos Portisch eleventh; while Milan Vukic and Robert Byrne shared thirteen. The last place finishers also shared Enver Bukic and Gligoric. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear, bookseller's sticker to title else a very good copy.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 33 pages with diagrams, tables and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. (Lusis: 1773) First edition. The 45th USSR Championship was held at Leningrad, November 28 - December 22, 1977. The following players finished up just in time to spend Christmas with their families: Lev Alburt; Vladimir Bagirov; Yuri Balashov; Iossif Davidovich Dorfman; Efim Geller; Karen Ashotovich Grigorian; Boris Gulko; Alexander Kochyev; Gennadi Kuzmin; Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian; Lev Polugaevsky; Oleg Romanishin; Vasily Smyslov; Evgeni Ellinovich Sveshnikov; Mikhail Tal; Vladimir Borisovich Tukmakov. Well, maybe it wasn't Christmas, but it was a time of peace as two-thirds of the games were drawn, a USSR Championship record. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Petrosian found his way to the lead. However, a loss in round 8 allowed Gulko to first catch him, then take the lead with a win over Smyslov in round 9. At this point both players went into draw mode, spliting point after point. That set up a last-round showdown between the leaders, reminiscent of the situation in 1975 where Petrosian defeated tournament leader Gulko in the penultimate round. However, Boris kept his head (helped by having White this time around) and drew to keep his lead over Petrosian. But not over everybody else. The slow pace allowed Dorfman to come back and tie for first with a last round win over Smyslov. Meanwhile, Polugaevsky and Tal fought for a chance to catch Petrosian for third place, and this time the older man prevailed. Gulko and Dorfman then drew a six game play-off match *Game Collection: Gulko - Dorfman Play-off Match, 1978)m so everybody just called it a day and let them reign as co-champions. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 55 pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. Round by round commentary by Jonathan Speelman. First edition. USSR Championship (1988) The 55th Soviet Chess Championship held in the capital city of Moscow from July 25th to August 18th, 1988 was a category XIV event. The Soviet Union's top eighteen players participated in the event, making it the strongest USSR championship since 1973. Eight grandmasters qualified for the championship from two First League swiss-style tournaments played the year before. Vassily Ivanchuk (2625), Leonid Yudasin (2505), Mikhail Gurevich (2630), and Viktor Gavrikov (2545) qualified from Lvov, with Alexander Chernin and Vereslav Eingorn (2560) qualifying as reserve players. Ilya Smirin (2500), Alexander Khalifman (2530), Andrei Kharitonov (2550), and Vladimir Malaniuk (2520) qualified from Sverdlovsk, with Vitaly Tseshkovsky and Boris Gelfand qualifying as reserve players. Alexander Beliavsky (2665), Valery Salov (2625), and Jaan Ehlvest (2580) qualified as the top three finishers of the 54th USSR Final. The remaining seats went out as invitations to the world champion, Garry Kasparov (2760), former world champions Anatoli Karpov (2725), Mikhail Tal, and Vasily Smyslov (2550), and world championship candidates Andrei Sokolov (2600), Rafael Vaganian (2595), and Artur Yusupov (2620). Games were conducted in Moscow's new International Hotel, where one thousand seats were set up for spectators, with Mikhail Botvinnik serving as the head arbiter. Tal was only able to play his first game of the tournament against Vaganian, where he was forced to draw quickly due to illness. When Yusupov was asked to play his round two game at Tal's sick bed in his hotel room, he refused and so it was determined that Tal should be replaced. Verelav Eingorn was pulled from the reserve list and played in Tal's place, forcing Vaganian to replay his first round draw. Tal's lone game is included in this collection for completeness and historical accuracy. The tournament itself was both a showcase of established Soviet chess brilliance, but also a debut for new talents and the next generation of players. Nevertheless, Kasparov and Karpov both emerged triumphant, tied for first having gone undefeated with 11½/17. While a play-off match was the normal course to determine a sole winner (see Beliavsky's triumphant play-off against Salov from '87), both Karpov and Kasparov refused to play an extraneous match against one another. Although everyone was disappointed and Botvinnik pleaded with both players to comply, it was understandable why both would be reluctant considering they had just played four world championship matches against each other in as many years. Since no resolution could be reached, both players were declared champion, and both received identical trophies to mark their achievement. It was Karpov's third and final Soviet crown, as well as his first shared, and it was Kasparov's second shared and final Soviet crown (though he would be sole first in the Russian Super-Final in 2004, after the fall of Soviet Russia). In the strongest championship in 15 years, the two strongest players in the world showed that once again they were without peer even among the very best of their own countrymen. Condition: Light edge wear.
