Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 172-182 pages with maps and cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers Volume 37, Number 2 complete issue. First edition. The famine of 1454, the most devastating one recorded for pre-Columbian central Mexico, led to disease, massive migration, and widespread death, but is only vaguely presented in the records. This paper reanalyzes the famine sequence, points out its differing impact on various segments of the population, and examines the long-term consequences for Aztec society. Imperial expansion, which has been suggested as a response, is discounted in favor of agricultural intensification. Condition: Light edge wear, spine sunned else very good.

Hardcover. Tan boards with red spine lettering; white dj with bw illustration and red lettering; xx, 404 pp; bw illustrations. "In exploring the pattern and methods of Aztec expansion, Ross Hassig focuses on political and economic factors. Because they lacked numerical superiority, faced logistical problems presented by the terrain, and competed with agriculture for manpower, the Aztecs relied as much on threats and the image of power as on military might to subdue enemies and hold them in their orbit. Hassig describes the role of war in the everyday life of the capital, Tenochtitlan: the place of the military in Aztec society; the education and training of young warriors; the organization of the army; the use of weapons and armor; and the nature of combat."- dj Includes bibliographical references (pages 361-381) and index. Good/Good (ex-library with labels and stamps on spine, block, inside front and rear covers and title page verso. Light soiling to upper block. Pages are otherwise clean and clear.).

Cloth Hard Cover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. Octavo. 364p. index. bibliography. Hassig brings a fresh approach to a study of Aztec urban life in 15th and 16th Century Mexico with a careful history of the evolution of transportations systems that used water and labor but not the wheel to accomplish great projects. The author has broken some new ground in noting connections with wider theories which are ready for the next several generations as they attempt to see the larger pictures now that so much painstaking archaeological work has been done.

Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. xvi+220 pages with figures, maps, tables, plates, appendix, bibliography and index. Octavo (9" x 6") bound in original wrappers. Inscribed by the author. First edition. Based on their enormously complex calendars that recorded cycles of many kinds, the Aztecs and other ancient Mesoamerican civilizations are generally believed to have had a cyclical, rather than linear, conception of time and history. This boldly revisionist book challenges the understanding. Ross Hassig offers convincing evidence that for the Aztecs time was predominantly linear, that it was manipulated by the state as a means of controlling a dispersed tribute empire, and that the Conquest cut off state control and severed the unity of the calendar, leaving only the lesser cycles. From these, he asserts, we have inadequately reconstructed the pre-Columbian calendar and so misunderstood the Aztec conception of time and history. Hassig first presents the tradition explanation of the Aztec calendrical system and its ideological functions and then marshals contrary evidence to argue that the Aztec elite deliberately used calendars and timekeeping to achieve practical political ends. He further traces how the Conquest played out in the temporal realm as Spanish conceptions of time partially displaced the Aztec one. His findings promise to revolutionize our understanding of how the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican societies conceived of time and history. Condition: Inscribed on title. A fine copy. Inscribed by Author(s).
