The first volume on Italian Literature contains the certificate signed by Rossiter Johnson, secretary. Pellico was an Italian writer, poet, dramatist and patriot active in the Italian unification. His tragedy Francesca da Rimini was brought out with success by Carlotta Marchionni at Milan in 1818. In October 1820, Pellico was arrested on the charge of carbonarism and conveyed to the Santa Margherita prison. The sentence of death pronounced on him in February 1822 was finally commuted to fifteen years of jail in harsh condition, and in the following April he was placed in the Spielberg, at Brünn (today's Brno), After his release in 1830, he commenced the publication of his prison compositions. This work "My Prisons" (1833) was translated into many language and made hime known throughout Europe. A heavy book (3.0 JM PLX 501/2 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Serao was the first woman called to edit an Italian newspaper, Il Corriere di Roma and later Il Giorno. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize six times but never won.
