Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. TURNER, J. M. W. (illustrator). "Of all things, living of lifeless, upon this strange earth, there is but one which, having reached the mid-term of appointed human endurance on it, I still regard with unmitigated amazement. I know, indeed, that all around me is wonderful--but I cannot answer it with wonder:--a dark veil, with foolish words. But one object I never pass without the renewed wonder of childhood, and that is the bow of a boat." Red boards with gilt lettering on the spine and front covers. Covers are well thumbed and rubbed, with some small patches of white discolouration upon spine and boards. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Head and tail of spine bumped, corners smooth and bear some wear. Head of spine has small piece missing. Spine sunned. Free endpapers, pastedowns and title pages bear moderate discolouration and light foxing. Page edges well thumbed, discoloured and lighlty foxed. Binding is tidy. Pages throughout may bear a light patch of foxing here and there. This book is in fair condition. *We always describe the faults of our books meticulously; they usually present better than they sound.

Hardback. Zustand: Fine. J. M. W. Turner (illustrator). New Edition. THE HARBOURS OF ENGLAND John Ruskin. Illustrated by J. M. W. Turner. Edited by Thomas J. Wise. George Allen, Orpington 1895 New Edition Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in exceptionally fine condition bound in brown linen covered boards with blind borders front and rear and gilt titling to the spine There are two book plates, the one on the front paste down is of Matthew Henry Whitty Devenish, a member of the brewing family and another to the f.e.p. There is also a small label of the issuing bookseller (D. M. Beach, Salisbury) There is some typical offsetting to the endpapers but the text block is bright and tight. This book was originally published in 1856 and reprinted but after 1877 there was no new edition and thus became one of Rukin's lesser known works. Ruskin very much admired Turner's art and to a great extent iot is believed that he took inspiration from Turner in his own art work. The 12 photogravure plates are copies of better quality examples of the original Lupton plates, as used in Ruskin's serial publication 'The Ports of England' and later published with six others in a folio with Ruskin writing the commentary to Turner's marine painting. as available at the time of publication. The "Harbours" are Dover, Ramsgate, Plymouth, Catwater, Sheerness, Margate, Portsmouth, Falmouth, Sidmouth, Whitby, Deal and Scarborough. The editor provides a history of the publication of the book, of earlier editions, and of the Turner illustrations. Thomas J. Wise of course went on to greater notoriety when it was discovered that he had perpetrated a great many forgeries of nineteenth century pamphlets, including one or two by Ruskin! Ref J4.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes bound in one. lxii, 192 printed pages. 12 tissue guarded, fine, steel engraved plates after J.M.W.Turner. Pages are bright, with just some scattered instances of foxing. Upper hinges are cracked yet still remaining firmly bound. 24 x 32 cm. In publisher's green embossed cloth binding with slightly worn printed paper spine label. Corners with just some slight bumping. Extreme edges of lower corners very slightly stained, not affecting the pages within. In the late summer and autumn of 1832, Turner toured the coast, countryside, and urban settlements of northern France, focusing most of his attention on Paris and its satellites, and also on the picturesque banks of the River Seine as it meanders through Normandy. His immediate aim was to gather materials for which he had been commissioned to provide illustrations for the publisher Charles Heath, a two-volume account of a leisurely cruise up the Seine from Le Havre to Troyes as part of the series entitled Turner's Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833-5; in 1880, reissued as Rivers of France). At least two sketchbooks in the Turner Bequest ("Seine and Paris" and "Paris and Environs") are firmly attributed to this tour. This connection has been made primarily because their contents are closely related to the subsequent published illustrations.
