Published as cover artwork for the 1996 issue on compact disc of Shakespeare's comedy by Caedmon Audio. Sendak's illustration, showing Beatrice and Benedick, was one of two illustrations from the Caedmon series reproduced in Schiller & David's lavish Maurice Sendak, a celebration of the Artist and his Work. Caedmon Records was founded in the US in 1952 and became a pioneer in audiobooks. In the early 1960s, there were two rival series of Shakespeare on record. The UK Argo company released a scholarly series, which was described by one commentator as "a heritage project" (Folkerth). In contrast, as noted by Folkerth, "the Caedmon series was a commercial venture that counted on the star power of actors such as Richard Burton, Ralph Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Rex Harrison, Anthony Quayle, and Paul Scofield. Whereas the Argo recordings have a documentary feel to them, as if the microphones are merely capturing a stage performance, the Caedmon directors experimented with ways to make the listener's stereo speakers project a soundscape, one that could express depth and close proximity. The Argo plays are meant to sound like recordings of performances; the Caedmon recordings are meant to sound like performances in themselves, native to the medium". The original Caedmon recording of Much Ado About Nothing dates from 1963 and starred Rex Harrison as Benedick and Rachel Roberts as Beatrice. Other members of the cast included Charles Grey, Robert Stephens, Eileen Atkins, and Patricia Routledge. In the mid 1990s, Caedmon Audio, now part of HarperCollins, re-released many of their Shakespeare recordings and commissioned new artwork from Sendak. This digitally remastered recording was issued with the catalogue number CD206. As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing and The Winter's Tale were also collected together and issued in a box set (the "Shakespeare Audio Collection", catalogue number BGS020). Exhibited: Society of Illustrators, New York, "Maurice Sendak, Genius of American Picture Books", 1 April - 10 July 2021. W. Folkerth, "Shakespeare and Audio Recording", in B. Smith (ed.), The Cambridge Guide to the Worlds of Shakespeare, 2016, pp. 1926-1930; Justin G. Schiller, Dennis M. V. David & Leonard S. Marcus, Maurice Sendak, a Celebration of the Artist and his Work, 2013, p. 189. Original drawing (81 x 64 mm) on card (139 x 134 mm), ink and watercolour, signed and dated "M. Sendak - Oct.
