  • Hardcover. First edition (NAP) . Hardcover, original red, black and gilt pictorial cloth (2 boys fending off an attack by a wolf, surrounded a floral motif) , 345 pp, illustrated with drawings (in text and plates) . Good+ to very good, no dustjacket. Corners lightly bumped, drop marks and some soil on rear board, a few approximately 1/8th nicks at head and foot of spine. Internally, previous owner's pencil sgn, dated 1893, irregular tanning on endpapers, probably from some vanished laid-in clippings, closed 1 inch tear on paste-down front endpaper, rear hinge cracked with gauze exposed, front hinge possibly glue repaired, paper lightly age yellowed, flipped through, biut otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Short stories by various authors, some apparently true, on the Horatio Alger type theme of boys overcoming adversity, working hard, etc. , and finding success, including one about Jimmie Davis in Jacksonville, Florida, who raised alligators, another about Paul (Wayland) Bartlett who became a successful sculptor, and even one on the New Hampshire State Antiquarian Society.
