Original Wraps. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition in English. Penguin Modern European Poets series - Penguin Catalogue No. D86. ***First printing of the first UK edition in English, published as a paperback original (PBO) in August 1965. Translated with an introduction by Jack Bevan. ***Near fine in colour illustrated thin card covers, with the printed price of 3/6 on the front cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but no significant creases or tears. Spine unfaded and clean with no reading creases. Spine tight. Covers bright. Internally also near fine with a previous owner's name on the inside front cover, but no other ownership details or annotations. Paper stock lightly tanned but pages clean. No creases or tears. ***180mm x 108mm. 110 pages plus a single page advert for Penguin Modern European Poets at the back of the book. ***'In 1969 Salvatore Quasimodo, the Sicilian poet, was awarded the Nobel Prize for "his lyrical poetry which with classical fire expresses the tragic experience of life in our time". No previous edition of his work has been published in England, These new verse translations by Jack Bevan prove him to be, in the best sense, a contemporary poet, a major European voice, and a social and individual conscience - a poet who must be heard and heeded.' ***'Penguin Modern European Poets is designed to present, in verse translations, the work of significant European poets of this century for readers unfamiliar with the original languages. The series already includes Yevtushenko, Rilke, Apollinaire, and Prévert.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original, in the original card covers, in beautiful near fine condition - uncommon thus. One of the scarcer titles in the series. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
