Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. Hardcover. An exhibition catalog featuring the art of Kehinde Wiley, the artist chosen to paint Obama's official portrait. 11 1/4" X 8 3/4". 40pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Gentle rubbing and a couple spots of toning to covers and edges of red silk over boards. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. An overall clean, solid copy of this catalogue published in conjunction with with exhibition, The World Stage: China, presented at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center from February 11-May 6, 2007. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Exhibited at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin, The World Stage: China is a series of monumental paintings that continues his investigation into the blurry divide between urban/highbrow and traditional/contemporary representations. These paintings evolved as a result of an invitation to Wiley to start a studio in Beijing. While interested in working in China, Wiley felt it was important for the paintings to embody a specific reference to Chinese culture. In his discovery of historic propaganda posters from China's Cultural Revolution, Wiley found a correlation between the ways in which African American identity has and continues to be manufactured and manipulated by both the media and society, and how Chinese national identity was distorted during the Maoist era.(Publisher).

Color illus. on recto, details on verso. Pictorial postcard. Hartford, CT: Real Art Ways, 2002. Rare exhibition postcard for Wiley's very first solo show, held at Real Art Ways in Hartford. The show, presenting his portraits, was curated by Steven Holmes. The recto bears an illustration of the artist's The Conspicuous Fraud Series (2001). Fine. We could not find any mention of this exhibit in the lists maintained by the artist's main galleries. â § See the New York Times article "Embracing the Offbeat in a Corner of Hartford" (24 Nov. 2002) about Real Art Ways (accessed online 20 Feb. 2022)-"The center is also currently exhibiting the work of Kehinde Wiley, a painter who combines elements of hip-hop culture with an old master's influence to produce pieces examining black masculinity.".
