Dated 1910 on copyright and title page. 408 pages, followed by 3 pages of advertisements. Good condition. Binding snug and strong. Cloth is rubbed at the corners and spine. Some ex-library markings to the foot of the spine, including fading to the cloth where tape was removed. Pages are lightly toned, with darker toning to the endpapers and edges. A Library of the National Association of Audubon Societies stamp to the front attached endpaper. On the title page, where one of the authors is listed as C. someone has pencilled in C.(harles). No other marks or writing to be found. Black and white photographs throughout. Overall good condition. This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. 408 pp. 8vo. Original green cloth boards. Gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Gilt on the top edge. Boards have some scratches and show signs of wear. Binding is rather loose. A few marks in pencil on the front free endpaper. A former owner's bookplate on the front paste down. The remainder of the pages are clean and unmarked. Illustrated profusely with 160 maps, sketches and photographs. Mary Blair Beebe was born on a plantation in Virginia. She married William Beebe, the Curator of Birds at the New York Zoological Park, which is now the Bronx Zoo. The pair went on three honeymoons to celebrate their marriage, and travel was to be a huge part of their relationship. Their trip to Venezuela and British Ghana was sponsored by the Bronx Zoo, where they recorded jungle life and visited a gold mine amongst other adventures.

Contains some black and white photographs as well as text throughout.
