Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 184pp+illus. Dj faded on spine, o/w a really nice copy. A fine account of the fascinating early attempts to bring order out of nineteenth century chaos, bringing the story up to date of publication with details of motor patrols, the marine section, police systems and the adoption of computers to fight crime, a field in which Essex was among the pioneers. Appendices cover short histories of the borough police forces which have since been absorbed into the Essex Police. Very well illustrated. Index.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor. 1st Edition. 175 pages. This is Anthony Horowitz's first book. Horowitz is now one of the most successful childrens authors in the world. He is best known for his Alex Rider series of books (now made into movies), for his TV series, "Foyles War" and now - after being entrusted by the Fleming estate - new James Bond novels. The dustjacket, the illustrations on which gives hint of Horowitz's boyish energy and humour, is sadly in poor condition. It has many tears - open and closed about both the front and back. Previous attempts at repair have been but a finger in the dyke. Nonetheless the body is clear and the flaps are complete and clean. The red cloth cover is in considerably better condition. It is strong, secure, sure. There is some shelving along the bottom edge run; the corners have shelf depressionsd; the head and foot of the spine have shelf pulls. There is minor discolouration to the bottom of the spine and front edge. The back cover has a faint surface stain to the top left corner, There is also an impression mark that does not travel through the cover. Inside the pages are in very good condition. They are cheerily bright, clean, unblemished, uninjured and strong. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

First edition of the author's second book. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout in black and white by John Woodgate. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with light bumping at the spine tips. The contents with a little rippling to the pages at the upper edge are clean throughout. Complete with the lightly creased dustwrapper which has a few small nicks and a single short closed tear at the extremities. Not price-clipped (£4.50 to the front flap). Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "For ma, (again) / Lots of love, / Anthony xx / 29.8.82". An important presentation copy from the author to his beloved mother. Horowitz has made no secret of the fact that his wealthy but largely unhappy and brutal childhood compelled him to write for children as it allowed him to relive the formative years he never had. His father, a businessman and political fixer, who despite a love of literature and assembling an extensive library himself, ridiculed the commercial viability of his son's desire to become a writer. Sadly he died [and with him the whereabouts of the family fortune, never to be recovered] the year before his son's first book was accepted for publication. Horowitz describes his mother as an extraordinary woman whom he adored, encouraging his interest in reading and writing, and in his teens introducing him to classic horror novels such as Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Since the publication of this, his second novel, Anthony Horowitz has gone on to become one of the UK's most successful and sought after genre novelists and screenwriters creating new adventures for Ian Fleming's James Bond, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and writing for Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot!
