Zustand: vg. Reprint. Quarto. XLIV, 548pp (text), 243pp (plates). One-volume reprint of Woodward's magnificent work published in Shangai in 1928. For anyone seriously interested in the early stamps of Japan, "The Postage Stamps of Japan and Dependencies" remains today an important and useful book, not merely as a bibliographic landmark but also as a practical guide to a complicated subject. Though this work deals with Korea and Taiwan also, Japan is the primary topic. During the 57 year period (1871-1927) covered by this book, 258 major varieties of postage stamps were issued for Japan and the Japanese Offices in Korea and China. To these 258 stamps, Woodward devoted 300 pages, not counting the important introductory chapters on details of paper, perforation, and gum. This exhaustive work is profusely illustrated with 243 b/w photographic plates. Some age-wear on dust-jacket with spine sunned and minor chipping along edges. Corners of binding slightly bumped. Dust-jacket in overall good-, binding and interior in very good condition.
