Buch Erstausgabe
Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. First Edition. 318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor browning at top edge of flaps, minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine.
