Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Reprinted with Corrections. This is the second impression, with corrigenda, of the first volume of the Pilgrim edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens (first published in 1965), for which Mrs Madeline House was awarded the Rose Mary Crawshay prize of the British Academy. She had taken over the editing after the death of her husband, Humphrey House, in 1955, and was later joined by Mr Graham Storey, Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge (now University Reader), and subsequently by Mrs Kathleen Tillotson, Professor (now Emeritus) in the University of London. They have continued since her death, in 1978. Although Dickens was only 27 when this first volume closes at the end of 1839, he was already a husband and father; and had already published Sketches by Boz, Pickwick, Oliver Twist, and Nicholas Nickleby, besides a mass of journalism. The 1059 letters here presented show clearly the beginnings of that superhuman energy and gusto which were to characterize all his life and letters. Hardcover, red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine within a pale blue panel, in red and pale yellow dustwrapper. xlvi, 750 pages, Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Dickens plus a portrait of John Foster and facsimiles of letters. 6.25 X 9.5 inches.Very good book, with a bump to the top edge of the front board, and a few spots to the top edge, in a dustwrapper wich has a clean cut of 5 cms to the middle of the front panel. The dustwrapper is in a clear paperlined removable protective jacket.Included is a typed and signed letter on "Letters of Charles Dickens - Pilgrim Edition" headed notepaper to a Mrs. Bott requesting and explaining the need for an extension on her loan of her copy of the Nonesuch edition of the letters of Charles Dickens, so that the present volume can be completed. The letter is signed by Madeline House, and loosley inserted.
