Hardcover. The four volumes contain 56 full page copper engravings by Giuliano Zuliani, Tommaso Baratti, Ferdinando Fambrini, Giacomo Malosso, Giacomo Leonardis, Pietro Antonio Novelli and an engraved frontispiece of Ariosto by Giuseppi Daniotto. The notes for the binder call for another copper engraving to precede that frontispiece, but it is not present in this copy. Marbled endpapers and edges. Each volume contain a cloth marker ribbon. A large copy (289 x 204 cm) with wide margins. Bound in full calf. Binder's label of "C. Meyer, Bookseller and Bookbinder to the Queen and Princesses, 2 Hemmings Row, St. Martins Lane" - ie, Charles Meyer, a German emigre who was bookbinder to Britain's Queen Charlotte. Meyer was active in London from 1797 until his death in 1809, though the firm apparently continued until 1811, so the volumes were presumably bound during that 14 year period. The volumes were later rebacked (see photos). Each volume contains, on the verso of the front free endpaper, an ink notation ("L/ 4 E 3"; "L/4 E 4"; "L/4 E 5"; "L/4 E 6") - presumably the location marks for a substantial private library, but the volumes contain no other indication of which of the several aristocratic collectors for whom Meyer worked was the original owner of these volumes. In parts of volumes three and four, the upper and/or lower corners of the pages are very faintly dampstained, not affecting the text and in fact barely visible. With that exception, this is a very nice copy, clean, crisp and with wide margins, of a very handsome and finely illustrated edition of one of the monuments of classic Italian literature. . Four volumes. The 46 cantos are followed by the 5 additional cantos, and then by about 136 (unnumbered) pages of bibliographies, summaries and indices.

Hardcover. In a 20th century binding, quarter morocco over marbled boards, with gold-on-black spine labels. Bound without half titles. Three different circular embossed stamps (blind stamps) are noted, each about 1.5 inches in diameter. The first, reading "LIBRARY OF ARTHUR BEISS" on the circumference and "ABJ" in the center, appears on an early blank in each volume. The second is essentially the same, but reads "LIBRARY OF JUDITH BEISS" on the circumference and "JBA" in the center, and is found on a rear blank in each volume. A third circular embossed stamp of the same size is not entirely legible. It reads "THE [illegible] LIBRARY ASSOCIATION" on the circumference, with two smaller illegible lines, and a year, probably 1885, in the center. It is found on page 5 of each volume, and also on page 345 of volume 2, and page 327 of volume 3. The volumes contain no other ownership markings or annotations or markings of any kind. The pages are mildly foxed but without tears or other damage. . Three volumes, separately paged.

These corners have been skillfully replaced with white paper (see photos). Pages browned and occasionally foxed, but with no other defects. A presentable copy of a surprisingly scarce early history of the American Revolution (and an Isaiah Thomas imprint). . Two volumes. (344, 411p.) Errata page.

Hardcover. Bears the bookplate of Russell and Clinton, Architects - the NYC firm responsible for many notable early 20th century buildings, including the Astor Hotel. A previous owner has added "C.L. EMY" to the title page in pen. Part of the backstrip is lacking, but otherwise the contemporary calf binding is in good condition, and firm. Old French bookseller's ticket inside back cover. Wormhole in upper inside corner of the early pages, not affecting text. . 68 plates (including the frontispiece) plus 25 plates in the second part. This is the first edition of the 24 year old Delagardett's commentary on Vignola. Illustrated with 68 plates drawn by Delagardette, followed by another 25 plates, with his commentary, illustrating the uses of shadow in architectural rendering. This edition is quite scarce. Although OCLC appears to list four copies in American libraries, all turn out to be later editions.

Hardcover. Cloth over paper boards. Boards edge-worn and discolored; rear board chipped in a few areas and warped due to dampstain; cloth backstrip wrinkled, with a couple worn spots, tear at bottom end, and a couple small remnants of torn label; large dampstain on rear endpapers, last pages, and content pages; top corner of rear free endpaper torn where it stuck to inside rear cover; pages slightly foxed, with text browned. The dampstain does not affect the Beaumont article. . 847p. (Missattributed to James Lovell, an error corrected on page 840). The whole of volume 8 is present, containing dozens of other medical reports, but probably none as significant as this initial report by William Beaumont on the first two years of his treatment of Alexis Saint Martin. Martin's accidental abdominal wound provided Beaumont with the opportunity to conduct pioneering experiments on gastric juices, which, continued for several more years, resulted in 1833 in the publication of his landmark book, Experiments and Observations of the Gastric juice and the Physiology of Digestion. In addition to becoming a milestone in the understanding of digestion, Beaumont's work has more recently sparked debate on the ethics of treatment which was pretty clearly contrary to the patient's best interest. Softcover in folding box. Perhaps the scarcest important book about this region (in 50 years of selling books in the Mohawk Valley, we've never before seen a copy), this is in fact a systematic photographic record of scenes of the river and of the cities and towns along it at the beginning of the 20th century. The excellent large photographs, presented one or two per 10.5 inch by 13.50 inch page, were presumably made by the anonymous person who also wrote some text for each volume; discovering that person's identity would not only be an interesting historical undertaking, but an act of justice to a talented photographer.
