First edition, third printing of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original boards. Boldly signed by Frank Herbert on the title page. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket art by John Schoenherr. Uncommon signed. Dune was awarded the first Nebula award for best science fiction novel, shared the Hugo award, and "became one of the most famous of all science fiction novels" (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family--and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing; in its first state dust jacket, with four lines at bottom of rear jacket flap. Publisher's light blue boards, with titles in white to spine, and gray endpapers with wavy design; in its original dust jacket with wraparound illustration by John Schoenherr, and map of Dune on rear panel. Very good book, with light toning to edges and spine ends, bottom right corner of front board lightly bumped, binding slightly cocked, and light soiling to fore edge of text block; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, light rubbing to folds, light wear and some shallow chipping to spine ends, minor creasing to bottom edge of front panel, some light spotting to rear panel, and small sticker to rear panel. Overall, an attractive copy in its very hard-to-find first state dust jacket. Dune is a science fiction epic set thousands of years in the future, where humanity is spread across the universe and ruled by an emperor. The story focuses on Paul Atreides, who comes to the desert planet Arrakis, or Dune, at a young age and rises to become an all-powerful and messianic figure. Incredibly ambitious in its scope, the novel deals with environmentalism, religion, eugenics, politics, and philosophy. Frank Herbert began researching and writing the novel after being inspired by the sweeping sand dunes near Florence, Oregon. He wrote two separate serials in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, which were later combined and published together as Dune. The novel was awarded the two most prestigious science fiction awards, the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award. The best-selling science fiction novel of all time, and arguably the greatest, the novel has had an enormous influence on the science fiction genre, perhaps most notably with the Star Wars series. Frank Herbert wrote five sequels to the novel, and his son, Brian Herbert, and the author Kevin J. Anderson wrote over a dozen more books in the series after Frank's death. The novel has a long history of film adaptations, including the aborted yet highly influential Alejandro Jodorowsky version, David Lynch's version in 1984, and the critically acclaimed Denis Villeneuve version released in 2021.

First edition. First edition, first printing. xxxvi, 412, [2] pp. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with spine lettered in white, patterned endpapers. Near Fine, hint of soiling to front board, small light stain to fore edge. In a Near Fine correct, unsophisticated dust jacket with publisher's price of $5.95 intact, four lines of text at the bottom of the rear flap beginning with "Chilton Books," etc.; with light rubbing to folds, head and tail worn, tiny crease to spine panel. An excellent copy. The bestselling, award-winning science-fiction epic inspired by the Oregon dunes. The novel in turn inspired multiple films as well as a series of novels by Herbert and his son. Increasingly uncommon in the correct dust jacket.
