Zustand: Near fine in very good jacket. First edition, first state of this spellbinding read-aloud masterpiece. Seuss's knockout success with limited-vocabulary stories for beginning readers, especially CAT IN THE HAT, led his publisher Bennett Cerf to offer a wager: 50 dollars that Seuss couldn't create a children's book using only 50 words. Composing GREEN EGGS AND HAM was a trial that went far beyond Cerf's fifty-dollar bet. According to biographer Brian Jay Jones, Seuss "would rise to meet Cerf's challenge - and it was probably not entirely a coincidence that the central plot point of the resulting book was all about convincing someone to do something he didn't really want to do." The outcome was the best-selling Dr. Seuss book of all time. This copy comes directly from the stock of Aleph-Bet Books, the firm of Seuss bibliographers Helen Younger and Marc Younger. 9'' x 6.25''. Original orange glazed pictorial boards. In original unclipped (195/195) color pictorial dust jacket. With "50 Word Vocabulary" statement applied as a sticker. 62 pages. Jacket with 3/4'' chip to head of spine, shallow edgewear, light soil. Book with light bumping; interior clean and bright.

Note that on the first edition of Green Eggs and Ham, the front dust jacket cover must have the blurb '50 Word Vocabulary' as a sticker. The sticker is essential to identification as a first edition. Both book and dust jacket are first issues, with statement that the book is Distributed by Random House, not published by Random House. Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904 -1991) was an American children's author, cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, and filmmaker. He is known for writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages. Geisel adopted the name "Dr. Seuss" as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. He began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and other publications. He worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns, most notably for Standard Oil, and as a political cartoonist for the New York newspaper PM. He published his first children's book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937. During World War II, he illustrated political cartoons, and he worked in the animation and film department of the Army where he wrote, produced or animated many productions including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. After the war, Geisel returned to writing children's books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), Green Eggs and Ham (1960), One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (1960), The Sneetches (1961), The Lorax (1971), The Butter Battle Book (1981), and Oh, the Places You'll Go (1990). His books have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, five feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series. Geisel won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for Horton Hatches the Egg and again in 1961 for And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Geisel's birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. He also received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Special for Halloween is Grinch Night (1978) and Outstanding Animated Program for The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (1982). Green Eggs and Ham is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published on August 12, 1960. Green Eggs and Ham is one of Seuss's "Beginner Books", written with very simple vocabulary for beginning readers. The vocabulary of the text consists of just 50 words and was the result of a bet between Seuss and Bennett Cerf, Dr. Seuss's publisher, that Seuss (after completing The Cat in the Hat using 236 words) could not complete an entire book without exceeding that limit. The 50 words are a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you. The book has become sufficiently ingrained in the cultural consciousness that U. S. District Court Judge James Muirhead referenced Green Eggs and Ham in his September 21, 2007, court ruling after receiving an egg in the mail from prisoner Charles Jay Wolff who was protesting against the prison diet. Muirhead ordered the egg destroyed and rendered his judgment in the style of Seuss. Senator Ted Cruz read the book on the floor of the United States Senate during his filibuster over the funding of Obamacare.

Pictorial Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition/First Printing. First printing possesses all points in Younger 'First Editions of Dr. Seuss.' An amazingly bright, tight and nice copy, both book and jacket. It has these small flaws: owner had neatly adhered front and rear jacket flaps to pastedowns with scotch tape, about 1.25 inches. Tape has been removed, remnants remain but do not badly detract. Owner address label removed from first endpaper, under this area is a small neat owner name and phone number. Again, an incredible nearly new-looking copy. This is NOT the extremely rare first issue with the 50 Word Vocabulary sticker glued to book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Hardcover with DJ. This appears to be a third printing of the first edition. 62 pages. DJ has some edgewear and some wrinkling, but is still glossy on the front cover. The '50 Word Vocabulary' notice is printed on the DJ, not attached as a sticker as it is in the first printing. The list of titles on the back cover ends with 'Little Black, a Pony' which is the 19th title on the list of Beginner books. The first printing has only 15 titles there; the second printing has 18. The notice at the bottom of the back cover of the DJ says, "A Division of Random House." First printings say "Distributed by Random House." Front flap of DJ has the price 195/195, which is correct for all early editions, including the first. The book itself is hardcover with glazed, illustrated boards. The front cover does NOT have the 'I can read all by myself' badge, which is consistent with the earliest printings. Pages clean and corners square. No stains or writing in the book, except for some speckling from the glue ghosting through the endpapers. Remains of an old price sticker on the front cover. This is the First Edition of the book, likely a 3rd printing (according to the changes described in the DJ). The book itself, without the DJ, is indistinguishable from the first printing. First printed in 1960. The list of books on the back of the DJ suggests that this copy came out in 1961 (since that's when the Black Pony book was published). DJ protected in mylar sleeve. A wonderful, early edition of a front-runner for the most popular children's book ever. Please email with questions or to request photos.
