Erstausgabe
First edition. First edition. Thick 8vo. Translated from the German by E. H. S. Calder. Color, full green pictorial cloth, light green endpapers, xx, 404 pp., frontispiece (general view of Kilima-njaro from the S. E.), preface, introductory, top edge gold gilt, illustrated, plates, maps, bibliography, index. Contains forty illustrations and three maps. The frontispiece and eight photographs were printed in Germany. Detailed appendices on the geology, geography, flora (mosses, lichens), and insects of the region. Hans Meyer was geologist and experienced climber who made four trips to the Kilimanjaro region in 1887-1889, culminating in his successful ascent, the first undisputed summit of Kibo, the highest of the mountain's two peaks, in 1889. In an earlier attempt, Meyer and his companion Oscar Baumann had the misfortune to arrive in the midst of an Arab revolt against German traders on the East Africa coast. They were taken prisoner and held hostage until a substantial ransom was paid. Meyer's ultimate success has been attributed to his recognition that the greatest obstacle to achieving the summit was the lack of food in the upper regions. He brought a sizable and well organized party and established several camps on the mountain, allowing him to make multiple attempts at the summit without descending to the base. His lively and highly readable account of the expedition is arguably the most important work on African mountaineering. Professionally recased with the original spine laid down, light rubbed at the spine ends, corners, and extremities, former owner's neat inked name on the half title page, else a solid very good copy with contents clean and attractive.

Erstausgabe
First English edition. 3 coloured folding maps, coloured frontispiece, 12 mounted photographic & 8 other plates, with further illustrations in the text. Original green pictorial cloth, gilt, with a little bruising to spine extremities. Fore-edge of front free endpaper slightly frayed as hinge tender between frontispiece and title page. Publisher's note tipped in. xiii, 404pp. London, George Philip & Son, Rare, and increasingly difficult to find in the publisher's pictorial cloth binding. ?Kilimanjaro is now an open secret; the great crater of Kibo has been discovered, the summit of the mountain has been attained, and the scientific material collected is such as to afford a tolerably complete picture of the most interesting region of equatorial East Africa? (Preface). The first serious attempts to climb Kilimanjaro weren't made until the late 1880's. In 1887 Count Teleki climbed as high as 17,300 feet and Meyer himself reached the ice-cap at 18,000 feet before being forced to return. Meyer's successful ascent with Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889 was all the more difficult for being made over the Ratzel glacier and without any climbing irons. Upon reaching the summit, he was able to refute the claim made by Ehlers in the same year that there was no crater. Neate, 517.

An unusually nice copy. IMPORTANT AND RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY PRIZED BOOK. One of the most important books on mountaineering in Africa. Kilimanjaro stands over 18,000 ft and has two peaks---Kibo and Mawenzi. This book documents the first successful ascent of Kibo peak, the highest peak in all of Africa. This book is exceedingly rare in condition such as our copy and one of the most sought after books on mountaineering. It is greatly sought after in the African oeuvre. In 1887, during his first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, Meyer reached the base of Kibo, but was forced to turn back. He did not have the equipment necessary to handle the deep snow and ice on Kibo. The following year, Meyer planned another attempt with cartographer Oscar Baumann, but the mission was aborted due to consequences stemming from the Abushiri Revolt. In 1889 Meyer returned to Kilimanjaro with the celebrated Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller for a third attempt at Kibo peak, they reached the summit on the southern rim of the crater on Purtscheller's 40th birthday, October 6, 1889. Meyer named this summit - now known as Uhuru Point- "Kaiser Wilhelm Spitze". The summit of Kibo wouldn't be climbed again until 20 years later.
