The Melbourne Savings Bank's head branch was designed by Purchas and Swyer and completed 1861.

The Menzies Hotel was the first of Melbourne's grand hotels. It was designed by Reed & Barnes and constructed on a site owned by Mr and Mrs Archibald Menzies at a cost of £32,000.The three-storey building with columned arcade and pavilion towers opened in November 1867. In 1872, visiting English writer Anthony Trollope claimed that he had never stayed 'at a better inn in any part of the world'.

The magnificent Oriental Bank, which stood on the corner of Queen Street and Flinders Lane, was designed by architects Robertson and Hale and completed in 1857.
