Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here are two wonderful long, but edifying, poems by England's Poet Laureate, John Masefield. "Dauber" was first issued in 1912; and "Reynard the Fox" was issued in 1919. This 1963 edition marks the First American edition of both poems, in this edition, bound into one volume. Many readers knew Masefield only as a poet; and indeed he was - a very fine one, and he was appointed as Poet Laureate for England, in which post he served longer than all but one other Poet Laureate : Tennyson. Masefield's most excellent production was prolific. He produced, not only poetry, but essays, plays and novels for both adults and children. His writing is particularly rich, his poems memorable , and his prose sonorous. ********************************************** "Dauber" is, in John Masefield's own words, "the story of a young man who wished to paint ships and the sea, and therefore shipped himself to sea that he might know these, and perhaps, in a few long voyages, earn enough money to pay for training in an art-school." It sounds like an adventure, and so it was; but it was a tragedy also. Masefield's verse telling of the story is wonderful and evocative, and marks him as the fine poet - storyteller that he was. ********************************************** "Reynard the Fox" is an age-old story, and has been much retold. Masefield gives an entirely fresh feel to the story. It was inspired by watching fox hunts when he was a lad; observing the fox - how it often escaped . and was often caught. What whiles it used to elude the hounds; and with what valor it all too often had to defend its life. If you read only one long poem this week this year read this. You won't regret it! ********************************************** TITLE : Dauber and Reynard the Fox / AUTHOR : John Masefield (1878 - 1967) / IMPRINT : The Macmillan Company / PLACE : New York / DATE : 1963 / EDITION : Reprint - but First American Edition / STATUS : OP - Out of Print / PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Trade hardcover; 169 pages; approximately 4 3/4" x 7 1/4" (12mo); pictorial boards; pictorial dust-jacket ***************************************** CONDITION -BOOK : VERY GOOD - JACKET : VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities have slight compression , else spine is clean and bright .
