The archeologist and historian James Henry Breasted was the first American to obtain a doctorate in Egyptology. Breasted led expeditions to Egypt and the Sudan and copied inscriptions from monuments that had been previously unreachable or were perishing. He was also responsible for organizing the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago in 1919.

Bumping to corners. Hinges cracked reinforced with binding tape. Ex-library stamps and markings. Interior pages are clean, unmarked and in very good condition. Volume one covers hieroglyphic transliterations, translation and commentary. The papyrus is named after Edwin Smith, who purchased the document in January 1862 during his stay at Thebes. The papyrus is the oldest known surgical treatise and consists entirely of case reports focusing on trauma and surgery. James Henry Breasted provided the first translation of the papyrus. "While the document which comes down to us dates from the Seventeenth Century B.C., the original author's first manuscript was produced at least a thousand years earlier, and was written some time in the Pyramid Age (about 3000 to 2500 B.C.). As preserved to us in a copy made when the Surgical Treatise was a thousand years old or more . . . the manuscript nowhere discloses the name of the unknown author." -from the Foreword. Rubbing, moderate soiling, and wear to boards, with numerous small spots of color loss; corners bumped and exposed, rear board fore-edge of Vol II exposed in places; light soiling to textblock edges; binding of Vol I cracked (but holding) at half-title, newspaper clipping affixed to front pastedown of Vol. II, else interiors unmarked and only lightly toned.
