Hardcover. Zustand: Good. A good copy, there is some wear to the covers and occasional light foxing and soiling (especially to the subscription pages, as expected). There is a brief bookseller s description pasted onto the rear endpaper and the stamp of the sales agent, G. A. Andrews of Salem, is on the title page. The author was the historian of the First Army Corps and died in 1906. This salesman s sample provides a fascinating look at the history and process of bookselling at the end of the 19th century as well as a historical record of the soldiers who served in the Civil War. This copy includes 30 photographic plates, a five page prospectus by the author, table of contents, list of illustrations, 24 pages of text from the book - generally the first few pages of a chapter, a subscription notice and eight pages for subscriptions. Three and a half pages of the subscription pages are filled in with subscribers name, town and/or address and military unit, most in the subscriber s own hand. Most of the subscribers are from Winchester or Woburn, Massachusetts. Many of the subscriptions are written in purple pencil and many have checks or crosses next to the names.
