Octavo. 291p. index. Yivo English translation series. An important study of how such a large part of the German academic community accepted the ideas of Anti-Jewish "Science". Among the worst was Gerhard Kittel whose expertise in the Hebrew Bible was soon interpreted through the Nazi system of hermeneutics. This is important for it shows how scholarship itself can be twisted in the hands of the totalitarian state. This insane hatred of the Jews had already driven many professors out of Germany and into England or to the United States. The result was the flowering of the American and English universities and the decline of the German Universities in comparison to the growing superiority of scholarship in the West. Bound in original stiff paper wraps lettered in black, yapped edges showing some wear, spine darkened, some toning to edges, internally clean without foxing names, or bookplates. A very good copy.

Wraps. Zustand: Fair. 291, [3] pages. Index of Persons. Index of Periodicals. Ex-library with the usual library markings. Ex-War Department Library (embossed stamp on title page). This is one of the Yivo English Translation Series. The present survey was concluded on March 15, 1946. It appeared in Yiddish in the Yivo-Bleter, Journal of the Yiddish Scientific Institute, Vol. XXVII, 1 and 2. In view of its general interest, it is being offered also in an English translation. Max Weinreich (22 April 1894 - 29 January 1969) was a Russian Jewish linguist, specializing in sociolinguistics and Yiddish. In 1923, under the direction of German linguist Ferdinand Wrede [de] in Marburg, he completed his dissertation, entitled "Studien zur Geschichte und dialektischen Gliederung der jiddischen Sprache" (Studies in the History and Dialect Distribution of the Yiddish language). In 1925, Weinreich was the cofounder, along with Nochum Shtif, Elias Tcherikower, and Zalman Reisen, of YIVO (originally called the â " Yiddish Scientific Institute). Although the institute was officially founded during a conference in Berlin in August 1925, the centre of its activities was in Wilno, which eventually became its official headquarters as well. YIVO's first office in Wilno was in a room in Weinreich's apartment. Remembered as the guiding force of the institute, Weinreich directed its linguistic, or philological section in the period before WWII. Weinreich was in Denmark when World War II broke out in 1939. Max moved to New York City in 1940. Weinreich became a professor of Yiddish at City College of New York and re-established YIVO in New York. This classic book examines the role of leading scholars, philosophers, historians, and scientists in Hitler's rise to power and eventual war of extermination against the Jews. Written in 1946 by one of the greatest scholars of European Jewish history and culture. "Dr. Weinreich's main thesis is that â German scholarship provided the ideas and techniques that led to and justified unparalleled slaughter.'. . . In its implications and honest presentation of the facts [this book] constitutes the best guide to the nature of Nazi terror that I have read so far."â "Hannah Arendt, Commentary. "Mr. Weinreich's book, by the wealth of its material and by its intelligent approach, offers the readerâ "in addition to a thorough treatment of the Jewish aspectâ "many opportunities to think about the role of scholarship in a totalitarian society."â "Hans Kohn, New York Times Book Review. "Building, in the immediate aftermath of the war, on a formidable bibliography of books, pamphlets, and articles, Weinreich provides erudite evidence of the scale and ramifications of Nazi support in German intellectual life."â "Martin Gilbert, from the introduction to a second edition issued in 1999. Excerpts from a review found on-line: The book presents a thorough account of the participation of leading German academics in the preparation, ideological cover-up and implementation of the murder of European Jews under the Nazis. Professors at Berlin Universityâ "the predecessor of Humboldt University, which has recently become an ideological center for the return of German militarismâ "played an especially important role in the Third Reich. Weinreich wrote his book in Yiddish immediately after the war, on the basis of thousands of documents and publications collected by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York. In this way, he was able to thoroughly document the complicity of well-known and influential German academics, coming from many different disciplines, in preparing the elimination of European Jewry. Weinreich's study shows that an entire layer of intellectuals placed themselves in the service of German imperialism, sharing responsibility for the greatest crimes in human history. At the beginning of his study, Weinreich states: "This murder of a whole people was not perpetrated solely by a comparatively small gang of the Elite Guard or by the Gestapo, whom we have come to consider as criminals. .German scholarship provided the ideas and techniques which led to and justified this unparalleled slaughter." (p. 6) Most of the academics discussed by Weinreich were "people of long and high standing, university professors and academy members, some of them world famous, authors with familiar names and guest lecturers abroad, the kind of people with whom Allied scholars used to meet and fraternize at international congresses." (p. 7) From the outset, Weinreich argues that the integration of these academics into the Nazi apparatus was by no means an accident. Many of them had already harbored right-wing nationalist and conservative views during the period of the Weimar Republic. First American Edition, First printing thus.
