Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. New and Revised Edition. A first printing of the true first edition, published as part of the Cambridge Edition of the Letters of D. H. Lawrence. The series eventually ran to eight volumes, the last being published in 2000. With a colour frontispiece showing a portrait of Lawrence, taken from the miniature owned by Louie Burrows, which is replicated on th front panel of the dustwrapper, and with sixteen pages of photographs in the centre of the book. ***Very good in scarlet cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. The page block edges are very foxed, but there is only slight bleeding from the fore-edge spots into the page edges. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. ***In a very good colour printed dustwrapper, which is unpriced. The dustwrapper is complete with no significant faults. There is some light edge wear and a couple of small nicks to the top edge, but no chips or tears. There is some light creasing to the foldover flaps. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***579 pages including a detailed Index at the back of the book. ***232mm x 145mm. ***'Volume I of the Letters, edited by Professor James T. Boulton, gives the first 580 letters in the series, covering the period September 1901 to May 1913. This is the time of Lawrence's youth in Eastwood and as a teacher in Croydon, his first year out of England - in Italy with Frieda - to the publication of "Sons and Lovers". There are letters to his early loves, especially Jessie Chambers, Louie Burrows, and Helen Corke. He writes "The White Peacock", "The Trespasser", "Sons and Lovers", the early stories and poems. He is welcomed into the literary world by editors such as Ford and Garnett; he meets Pound and other writers; he reads widely. His mother dies; he grows away from the younger women; he meets Frieda and elopes with her. By the end of the volume he is established as a writer and as a distinctive individual.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A very good copy of this first volume of "The Letters of D. H. Lawrence". A valuable resource for those interested in the life and work of Lawrence. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
