Morgan's copy with his name of the title page. (Cdn) From the library of Canadian civil servant and author, Henry J. Morgan (1842-1913), signed and dated, on the front free endpaper and on the title page indicating Brockville 1894". Noted for his bibliographic studies, this copy was obviously used as a reference, with Morgan's handwritten notes on various personages noted in text (up to 1901) on the rear endpapers and with text annotations. Morgan published Sketches of celebrated Canadians. in 1862. From 1862 to 1876, Morgan was editor for the Canadian Parliamentary Companion, the predecessor to the Canadian Parliamentary Guide. In 1867, he published the Bibliotheca canadensis, which included biographies and published works for Canadian authors between 1763 and 1867. From 1878 to 1886, he was responsible for the production of The Dominion Annual Register and Review. In 1898 he published The Canadian Men and Women of the Time and Types of Canadian Women in 1901. Morgan was a founding member of the Canada First movement. In 1904, he was named to the Royal Society of Canada. He died in Brockville at the age of 71 and is buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. In 2016, Morgan was named a Person of National Historic Significance by the Canadian government. He had a significant collection of Canadiana. ~ There is an old story in Ottawa bibliographic circles about bibliographer Morgan going to Aylmer, Quebec to address a group, no doubt to promote one of this books. It went so well he didn't get home until Monday morning. T.P.L. 3065. Includes "The proceedings of the Upper Canada Medical Board from its organization, 1819 to 1850; and of The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Upper Canada, 1839-41.; also, Biographical sketches [nearly 300] of early physicians of the province with many references to early events in the history of Upper Canada. A standard historical reference work, the author was a prominent physician and surgeon. He was a medical officer in the Crimea and was professor of pathology and surgeon at Victoria College, sub-dean of Toronto Medical School and the first medical health officer in Toronto.
