Dark blue cloth with gilt title on spine and gilt author's signature on first board, 22,5 x 15,5 cm, 329 pages + 14 pages of full page photos + 8 pages of cartoons, index. Very small slight white traces to first board, else fine. First edition, second printing (first printing : October 1935). INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR to front cover : "For my friend and comrade Maurice Faure, with ? and respect from Charles G. Dawes, February 18th 1936". Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951), a Republican politician, managed in 1896 William McKinley's presidential campaign in Illinois and, after the election, McKinley appointed him as the Comptroller of the Currency (1898-1901) and then he formed the Central Trust Company of Illinois. During World War I, he served as a major (June 1917), a lieutenant colonel (July 1917), a colonel (January 1918) and a brigadier general (October 1918) and was the Chairman of the General Purchasing Board for the American Expeditionary Forces AEF. He resigned from the Army in 1919. In 1921, President Harding appointed him as the first Director of the Bureau of the Budget (June 1921-June 1922). In 1923, Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover appointed him to the Allied Reparations Commission, where he helped formulate the Dawes Plan to aid the struggling German economy ; for this work, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925. In November 1924, the Republican ticket Calvin Coolidge Charles Dawes was elected, but Dawes and Coolidge became alienated from one another. Dawes helped pass the McNary-Haugen Farm Relief Bill in Congress, but President Coolidge vetoed it. In 1928, Dawes was a candidate for renomination at the Republican National Convention but Coolidge's opposition to Dawes helped ensure that Charles Curtis was nominated instead. In 1929, President Herbert Hoover appointed him as the Ambassador to the United Kingdom (June 1929-December 1931). In 1932, he briefly led the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which organized a government response to the Great Depression, but, the same year, he resigned and became Chaiman of the Board of the City National Bank and Trust, until his death. Dawes was a self-taught pianist and composer. His composition "Melody in A Major" became very known and, in 1951, lyrics were added, transforming the song into "It's All in the Game", which became a number-one hit in 1958 in USA and United Kingdom and then a pop standard recorded by very numerous artists. / United States.
