ESTC T186397. Lowndes I 718. ~ Historiographer Roderic O'Flaherty, a descendent of Eochaidh Muighmeadhon, King of Ireland (d. 366), was born in Castle Moycullen in Galway. He inherited the barony at age two, but he was more than once deprived of his property after the various political upheavals of 17th century Ireland, including Cromwell 's infamous confiscation of Irish property. O'Flaherty published Ogygia; seu Rerum hibernicarum chronologia in I685. He was a scholar of medieval Irish literature, and in this work "he displays scrupulous accuracy throughout, and is a trustworthy guide to the history of the Irish kings . the first in which Irish history was placed in a scholar-like way before readers in England" (DNB). The work was criticized by Sir George Mackenzie (I636-1691), of Aberdeen, who defended the previously-held beliefs of Scots royal ancestry, and O'Flaherty wrote Ogygia Vindicated as a response. It remained in manuscript until 1775, when Charles O'Conor published it in this scarce edition.
