Il y avait plus d'un siècle que le problème de la composition des forces agitait les milieux scientifiques. C'est en 1687, quand parurent quasi simultanément les Principia de Newton, le Projet de Varignon et la seconde édition du Traité de Méchanique de B. Lamy, que furent énoncée pour la première fois d'une façon claire cette loi sous la forme qui lui a été conservée." ---- "The technique of composing forces by the rule of the paralelogram had undergone more than a century of development when it was published, simultaneously in 1687 in Newton's Principia, Varignon's Projet and the second edition of Bernard Lamy's Traitez de méchanique. The simultaneous publication of the principle makes difficult any judgment regarding priority. Nevertheless, it was Varignon alone who grasped two important points. The first is that the law of the lever does not hold a privileged position in statics and that the unification of mechanics (the science of simple machines) was to be carried out on the basis of the composition of forces. The second concerns the inclined plane : that the real reason for the equilibrium observed is that the resultant of the applied forces is orthogonal to the possible displacement. These two points provide a good indication of Varignon's contribution to the development of the principle of virtual velocities.". Contemporary calf with elaborate gilt decorated spine, front hinge weak. As Professor of Mathematics at the College Mazarin and Professor of Greek and Latin at the College de France, Pierre Varignon (1654-1722) was one of the most noted scientists of his time. He was a close friend of Newton, Leibniz, and the Bernoullis, often striving to act as mediator between them. He was the first French scientist to understand the importance of the new differential calculus. This is the first edition of the author's first book and the first treatise in which the whole science of statics was deduced from the principle of the parallelogram of forces- which Varignon enunciates simultaneously and independently of Newton. Varignon (1654-1722), one of the outstanding scientists of his time, was an intimate friend of Newton, Leibniz, and the Bernoullis.
