Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 leaves, ii, 186 pp. Later 3/4-cloth and marbled boards (marbled paper rubbed), recased recently with new endsheets. Ink stamp (in Russian) on title page. First Edition in book form. Sechenov's book was originally published in the journal Meditsinsky Vestnik [Medical Herald], nos. 47-48, 1863, after censors had prevented its publication in The Contemporary, and required Sechenov to change the title from "An Attempt to Introduce Physiology as the Basis of Psychic Processes". Sechenov was indicted in 1866 after the publication of the book. "Sechenov, the father of Russian physiology, made his greatest contributions to neurophysiology in his studies of the reflex activity of the brain. Sechenov considered that cerebral reflex activity arose from stimulation of peripheral sense organs, was mediated through the psychic realm and was the source of voluntary actions. He believed further that reflex activity could be modulated by other brain centers, particularly the midbrain, which he believed could produce inhibition" (Garrison's History of Neurology, p.; 226). "His major work, The Reflexes of the Brain, which was a classic, appeared in 1863. In this field he stands with Goltz as a pioneer" (Haymaker & Schiller, Founders of Neurology, pp. 265-66). Pavlov frequently remarked that the inspiration for his own investigations leading to the discovery of conditioned reflexes came from Sechenov's book. In light of the frequent statements about the scarcity of the original Russian edition of Pavlov's Lectures on the Digestive Glands (1897), it should be noted that Sechenov's book offered here is scarcer outside Russia.
