Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Birmingham, D. Mason & Sons Limited, [circa 1890s?]. Quarto, [vi], 12 (index), [approximately] 147 pages with thousands of illustrations (many printed in colour). More accurately, apart from the preliminaries, many of the leaves are printed one side only (mainly the recto); there is an additional illustrated page 22A but no page 104; there are six additional unnumbered leaves of text, and unnumbered pages of text on the verso of 10 illustrations; there are 140 pages of illustrations, of which 115 are printed with some colour (and many of them are simply stunning). Gilt-pictorial dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on the front cover and spine, all edges dyed red; cloth a little flecked and marked, with a few light damp stains to the rear cover (with minimal associated cockling to the leading margin of the last 20 or so leaves); edges slightly marked; title page and last page offset; rear cover blemishes notwithstanding, an excellent copy (internally fine). A superb item, with many pages a visual treat, irrespective of the product displayed (or perhaps because of the nature of the objects). The text throughout is in English, French and Spanish. The full title in English is 'D. Mason & Sons, Birmingham. Manufacturers of Every Description of Leather, Saddlery, Harness, Whips, Military and Naval Equipments, Travelling and Sporting Appointments, Machine Belting, Saddle Trees, Saddlers' Ironmongery, &c., &c.'.

Zustand: Very good. An extraordinary and unique handmade artist's book, elaborately assembled by an anonymous artist. A kinky but lighthearted celebration of female flagellantism, the book appropriates quintessentially 1960s fashion models and recontextualizes them in dozens of original collages so that they are weilding whips, switches, and various similar tools. Paired with self-referential and irreverant texts, as well as black-and-white hand-penned drawings (presumably by the assembler) of bondage, spankings, and other S&M-themed scenes, the book humorously imagines Mod Girls as doms - a perhaps intentional visual pun. The collages, many spanning across page spreads (and including one fold-out), exhibit a strikingly skillful and stylish retraint, suggesting an ambition and audience beyond the merely pruriently personal. An outsider book of rare sophistication and wit: the Swinging Sixties meets Dada. Yeah baby. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. Boards. Likely commercial scrapbook, but possibly ad-hoc. Containing [66]pp. plus covers and one fold-out, all mounted both recto and verso with color collages consisting mainly of magazine models, with occassional textual elements (in German, many typed). Spine appears persished. But otherwise sound and apparently complete. Very good. Housed in custom Talas archival clamshell box.
