Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Chris Gaskin (illustrator). Revised Edition. In the late 1800s boats and ships in the Marlborough Sounds of the South Island began to notice a playful near-white dolphin that was attracted to their vessels. Soon the dolphin was regularly escorting the small steamers that ran services across Cook Strait in the sounds. For quarter-of a century Pelorus Jack, as the dolphin became known, kept up this routine, becoming world famous in the process. Photographed for papers and ,magazine and, as they say "a legend in his (or her) life time". Jack became tourist attraction too. After the winter of 1912 the dolphin was not seen again, its disappearance a mystery then, and now. Little has been written in recent times about "Jack" and when Tania Atkinson's book for children, "Pelorus Jack" was first published in 1984 (with a reprint later that year) it was the first for many years. She divided the story into five chapters which include the place of "Jack" in Maori mythology and culture, how he was placed under legislated protection by the NZ Parliament and advances theories on his demise. This revised edition published in 1995, 48 pages, new b/w illustrations by artist Chris Gaskin, including a map. Colour art card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. This light book will be posted at cost.

Soft cover. Zustand: VG. No Jacket. Photos Maps, Drawings (illustrator). 1st. During WWI more that 100,000 young NZ soldiers served on the battlefields of that conflict. This collection of extracts from letters written to family and friends at home paints a more poignant and unvarnished picture of life on the different fronts than that depicted in formal histories. Nearly NZ 17,000 soldiers died of combat causes and another 1000 from injuries shortly after hostilities ended while thousands were wounded. Only 35 of those soldiers are represented in this collection of letters and many of the correspondants also lost their lives. One writer had three other brothers serving in the NZ forces, three brothers were killed, the one who survived returned home severely wounded --- a grim example of the dreadful cost to NZ of WWI. The letters are arranged in campaign sequence beginning with Gallipoli then France and the Western Front 1916, Sinai- Palestine, Western Front-France and Belgium 1917 and Western Front 1918. First edition of 2001 from Harper Collins, 168 pages including endnotes, bibliography and index, numerous small portrait photos, some group photos plus a number of general scenes, several maps and drawings included with letters. Tinted pictorial card covers VG with light damage to corners, internally VG with corner turn-over light creases some pages, no inscriptions.

Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Documents (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Search For El Dorado 1800 - 1920", the author notes that his book is about European settlement in NZ in the 19th Century, but that it deals with people and events not featured prominantly in other histories. These are covered in five sections --- The Coastal Frontier, The Gold Rushes, Magic Towns on the Frontier, The Bush Frontier and The Closing Frontier. In addition to the author's excellent research and story-telling, a feature of the book is the amazing selection of "frontier" illustrations he has collected. In the main these are b/w photos, including several double-page spreads, with high quality reproduction throughout, there is some art and a few documents. The illustrations certainly present a telling picture of the "pioneering" life. First edition of 1992, 159 pages including bibliography/source notes and index. Pictorial card covers VG+, small label with former owner name top corner inside front cover, and in ink (small) top right FFEP, text block otherwise excellent.

Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos (illustrator). 1st. "Victory" is the third of Max Lambert's triology recording the contribution NZ airmen made to the aerial campaigns over Britain and Europe during the Second World War. The firs two ---"Day After Day" and "Night After Night" respectively covered the service of NZ fighter pilots during the conflict and those flying with Bomber Command. "Victiory", follows the fortunes of those Kiwi aircrew serving with the RAF immediately before, during and after D-Day, up to the German surrender in May 1945. This book brings together all aviation activities in which NZ airmen participated with the fighter squadrons in which they served mainly engaged in ground attack missions with air combats reduced by the growing weakness of the Luftwaffe, Meanwhile, the Bomber Command squadrons continued their night raids against the enemy, with Kiwi aircrew found in many roles in these aircraft as well as in aircraft carrnying paratroops, towing gliders or dropping weapons and supplies in airborne landings. Those flying night figher or reconnaissance missions are not overlooked, nor is that of the Coastal Command squadrons, still fighting the wars against U-Boats. All three books are recognised as being important additions to NZ's WWII aviation literature. "Victory" provides an impressive account of the last months of WWII in Eureope, from an aviation view-point, which is enlivened by the personal experiences of many who were there. A informative and graphic account of the many Kiwis with wings who took part in that achievement and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. First edition of 2014 from Harper Collins, 389 pages, including bibliography, abbreviations, index NZ aircrew and general index, illustrated with 30 pages b/w photographs in two collations, each page with multiple images including portriats. Card covers are VG+ with minute bends to front corner tips, dealer promotional label "top5" front upper corner, former owner name/date top edge FFEP, text block otherwise excellent.
