Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is the first study to compare advocacy, counselling and mediation as social processes of empowerment. It focuses on the user/worker partnership in care-giving services, and on the increasing imperative for cooperation between disciplines. The contributors, who are all practitioners and leading authorities in their fields, examine the cultural and organizational contexts in which each of these media has developed as well as their potential usefulness in casework. The chapters cover a number of areas of casework that cause particular concern including cultural and community conflict, work and post-traumatic stress management and health decision making, describing each in a multidisciplinary setting with case illustrations. Taking a socially inclusive approach, this book bases itself on principles which will promote positive action for social justice, as well as non-discriminatory, non-oppressive and non-stereotypical equal opportunities policies and practices. In this memoir, completed when she knew she was approaching death, Pat tells her story; starting with her childhood, through the early days of the Centre to its growth into Penny Brohn Cancer Care, the globally influential institution it is today. She speaks to life, not just to cancer, and shows how the restoration of the human spirit is an essential part of holistic healing. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Published in association with Save the Children Priscilla Alderson examines the often overlooked issue of the rights of young children, starting with the question of how the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child applies to the youngest children, from birth to eight years of age. The question of finding a balance between young children's rights to protection, to provision (resources and services) and to participation (expressing their views, being responsible) is discussed. The author suggests that, in the belief we are looking after their best interests, we have become overprotective of children and deny them the freedom to be expressive, creative and active, and that improving the way adults and children communicate is the best way of redressing that balance. This second edition has been updated and expanded to include the relevance of UNCRC rights of premature babies, international examples such as the Chinese one-child policy, children's influence on regional policies, and the influence on young children's lives of policies such as Every Child Matters and those of the World Bank, IMF, OECD and UNICEF. This readable, informative and thought-provoking book is a compelling invitation to rethink our attitudes to young children's rights in the light of new theories, research and practical evidence about children's daily lives. It will be of interest to anyone who works with young children. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. How do young people really feel about themselves, their friends, their families, their teachers and their lives in general? What makes them feel good or bad, and how do they cope? How We Feel is alive with teenagers' personal accounts, drawn from the uncensored responses to a questionnaire completed anonymously by almost 2000 teenagers. This innovative and accessible book shows, largely in their own words, how young people really feel about themselves and the world around them. They speak about school, parents, siblings, peers, romance, good looks, jealousy, bullying, sex, drugs, normality and difference, their joy, pain and confusion, and everything else. In the final section, a range of professionals who work with young people contribute their views on how parents, teachers, and other service providers can play a role in getting things right for the young people about whom they care. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Raising Responsible Teenagers combines comprehensive discussion about child development with practical advice on parenting styles and discipline techniques. Each stage of child development is discussed, creating a picture of where the child 'is at' on entering adolescence. Adolescence is the final stage of childhood, the springboard to adult life and a time where values are being blended into a mixture that parents can still greatly influence. Bob Myers provides the tools for this, such as the use of rules made and agreed on by all the family and based on the simple philosophy of `a fair go and safety for everyone'. Being a realist, he also offers ways of handling difficult behaviour and shows how adults in the parenting role can focus control on their own parenting skills, rather than focusing just on the child. Each chapter contains useful examples and checklists for further thought, as well as a fund of useful advice. This book will provide an extremely useful guide for parents, teachers and all those who wish to interact with young people in a conflict-free atmosphere, and who wish to see them become considerate, achieving and responsible adults. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Statistics indicate that by 1992 one in every three children under the age of 18 will have divorced parents. Recent research has shown that the effects of divorce on both children and parents follow a longitudinal pattern, with various forms of crises occurring before, during and long after the actual divorce takes place. Based on the multimodal method of therapy, this book discusses and develops various processes of intervention with the aim of minimizing the negative long and short term behavioural, cognitive and psychological consequences that divorce frequently produces in the children involved. This approach involves first identifying the problem stage that the child is at, and then utilizing effective intervention strategies in order to help both them and their families cope. A number of methods are developed, such as literatherapy and storytelling, play-therapy, and art-therapy, which can be used either in groups or with individuals as well as in combined groups of both parents and children, and which are illustrated and supported by case-studies. In addition to identifying and suggesting ways of dealing with the stress produced in children as a reaction to divorce, the text also examines the function of counsellors, therapists, teachers, psychologists and parents in aiding children and their families to cope. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

After two years at the pre-school, five-year-old Jimmy had failed to make any friends, had recently started to act aggressively towards his classmates, and was beginning to react violently to any changes in his routine. Echo was not taken completely by surprise: she had suspected for some time that her son was different from other children. Over the next five years, she and her husband accompanied Jimmy to doctors, medical specialists, learning consultants and psychologists. Finally, at the age of ten, Jimmy was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Gabriel is a teenager who is severely autistic: he is completely unsocialized, is incontinent and is unable to speak. In this book his mother, with great honesty, describes what it is like to bring up an autistic child who requires constant care and exhibits challenging behaviour. Written partly in diary form, Growing Up Severely Autistic covers the minutiae of daily life with vivid immediacy, from preventing Gabriel eating the goldfish, to helping him through his grief on the death of his father. Gabriel's life and relationships with his family are traced from early childhood, through his school days to his entry into residential care at the age of 17. With affection and humour, Kate Rankin has written a personal and intimate study of someone who is very different from those around him, and who cannot himself articulate his experiences. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Fostered and adopted children can present major challenges resulting from unresolved attachment issues and early traumatic experiences. In this much-needed book, the contributors provide a variety of complementary perspectives on the needs of these children and their families, focusing on ways of integrating attachment theory and developmental psychology into effective practice. Examining multiple aspects of work with children who are unable to live with their birth families, the book includes contributions on the assessment, preparation and support needs of children and families, attachment and the neurobiological effects of trauma, effective management of contact with birth families and developmental challenges in school settings. The use of creative arts therapies, alongside developmental reparenting strategies as part of a long-term attachment therapy `package', are explored in some detail. A fictionalised family, used as a working example throughout Part 2, brings practical interventions to life: illustrating the Family Futures' inclusive approach, where adoptive and foster parents become pivotal members of the therapeutic team. In addition, contributions from real-life user families illustrate some of the challenges they face and demonstrate how the developmental attachment-based approach has worked for them. Bringing together a rich and innovative selection of ideas for adoption and fostering practice across the disciplines, this book will be a valuable resource for all involved in supporting substitute families. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Part of the Reading Well scheme. 27 books selected by young people and health professionals to provide 13 to 18 year olds with high-quality support, information and advice about common mental health issues and related conditions. Winner of the NASEN & TES Special Educational Needs Children's Book Award 2003 Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive. Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself. Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating and relationships, and morality. Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Remorse, or rather the lack of it, frequently features in banner headlines. But there is little systematic study of this important inter-disciplinary topic whose relevance has extensive social ramifications. Should a show of remorse by an offender be taken into account in sentencing? Is there a correlation between the experience of remorse and a diminished likelihood of re-offending? And is there a correlation between the experience and the expression of remorse? Such questions, and the complex relationship between remorse, shame, guilt and attempts at reparation, are discussed in this authoritative work. This volume is the first comprehensive attempt to bring together both forensic clinicians and those working within the criminal justice system. There is also a series of chapters by those writing from the adjacent complementary disciplines of moral philosophy, classics, Shakespeare studies, sociology and anthropology. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. The author has specialised in working with adult abuse and the manual is set out in the way she recommends that training be presented. There are chapters on older people, black and minority ethnic people and younger adults, as well as on investigations and case conferences.' - Nursing Standard 'Working with Elder Abuse is a forthright and detailed training manual - the manual is a blend of theory, exercises, and further readings and it is anticipated that it will be used by staff trainers providing formal training as well as by supervisors who will work through it with their staff teams. The manual is clearly written, practical and realistic without being condescending. It clearly benefits from being written by someone who is herself a full time staff trainer on elder abuse and has tested and honed the suggested training materials through frequent use. The emphasis on experiential learning, drawing upon the experience of the training participants and exploring attitudes as well as knowledge is evident. This approach allows the potential user to feel comfortable with replicating the training modules and adpating them to fit other situations and content. Working with Elder Abuse is an excellent training guide. The care that has been taken in detailing all training steps, without burying the reader/trainee in duplicative content, makes one eager to utilize the manual immediately. It can be used equally well both as a self-training guide and to train large groups, and offers much that can be adapted for use with other content areas.' - Journal of Teaching in Social Work 'This book achieves its stated aim. As a manual for use in training, it provides a wealth of well presented material that may be used by trainers who have a background knowledge in the field. It can be recommended to those who have to raise awareness of this issue among the staff groups in the title.' - Registered Homes 'Pritchard (a well known and highly regarded contributor to the field) draws on her experience as a trainer to facilitate the empowerment of so called unqualified staff in confronting their own feelings when facing `victims and abusers'. Of all writers on elder abuse, she is grounded in practicability, underpinned by a clear grasp of the training needs of front-line staff. This handbook successfully integrates theory and exercises and should be on the shelves of all trainers. It will be indispensable for staff groups.' - Community Care 'This book pulls no punches. It discusses sensitive issues, such as sexual abuse, frankly in everyday language and is essential reading for managers and assistants about abuse. NVQ students will find it useful and NVQ assessment centres would be well advised to buy copies.' - Nursing Times 'A welcome addition to the available texts on elder abuse. Working with Elder Abuse by Jacki Pritchard is beautifully presented and easily accessible - large well spaced print, eye-catching headings, and interesting symbols signalling training tools such as handouts. The language is clear and fluid.' - Action on Elder Abuse Bulletin 'The language is clear and definitions and exercises are easy to understand. The text is well laid out, and there is a lack of jargon -This will be a very helpful book for all who are concerned about elder abuse and should contribute towards the reduction of such abuse in the future as well as giving confidence to trainers, managers, care staff and all who are involved in care of the elderly.' - Christian Council on Ageing 'Jacki Pritchard has produced a valuable addition to the training literature. For the beginner, this book is highly recommended.' - Baseline `The training manual is long overdue. The A4 format of the book and the permission to photocopy certain pages as handouts is very welcome. Residential and day-care issues are well covered with plenty of exercises. The straightforward language and the way that practical issues are addressed is effective. The manual is an excellent resource which managers, supervisors and trainers will find invaluable.' - Ageing and Society This practical training manual is written for home care, residential and day care staff, who need to be able to recognise elder abuse, but may not be trained to do so. Its large format, range of exercises and photocopiable worksheets makes it a valuable source of training material not only for training teams, but also for managers who train staff and teams on site. Each chapter contains exercises, a reading list and a simple discussion of the theory behind each of the key areas covered by the manual. These include: defining elder abuse recognizing elder abuse what to do when working with elder abuse case conferences long term work with victims and abusers abuse in institutions issues for managers case studies. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. People with autism often are intolerant of gluten (a protein in four types of cereal) and casein (a protein found in animal milk). There are many testaments to the benefits for such people of a diet that excludes gluten, casein, monosodium glutamate and aspartame, and these persuaded Marilyn Le Breton to put her autistic son Jack on the diet. This is the book that Marilyn wishes had been available to her when she first did so. In it she explains what the diet is all about and how it works, what foods can form part of the diet and what should be excluded. She addresses frequently asked questions and misconceptions, such as 'Is the diet too difficult and time-consuming? How strictly do I need to adhere to it? Is the diet expensive to implement?' and gives practical advice on basic equipment and ingredients, what to expect when your child starts the diet, how to adapt family meals and how to minimise cross-contamination in the kitchen. The book includes a wide selection of recipes, an extensive list of addresses and websites of suppliers of foodstuffs in the UK, and suggestions for finding out more information. It is the first book of its kind to be written specifically for those living in the UK. Marilyn's own experience and sensible approach ensure that this book will be invaluable for any parent of a child with autism, or any adult considering embarking on the diet. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. `The book describes a potted history of Phillip's journey, and mainly focuses on the practical aspects of brain injury, rehabilitation, returning home and to work. If you have little or no knowledge of brain injury then this book is a good starting point, both for the brain injured person or their family/friends.' - Encephalitis Information Resource `This is an excellent book for both patients and staff to read and the message of hope is "whilst life will change after brain injury I need not necessarily be the end of quality life. There really is life after brain surgery.' - Stroke Newsletter `Fairclough's frank discussion of sexual problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and his feelings about the loss of his role as the family breadwinner will resonate with many male readersFairclough does not overtly seek to inspire or impress the reader, yet he communicates that not only can one's life continue after head injury, but also it can be a good and meaningful life at that.' -Brain Injury Journal `The book is clearly set out, easy to read, good value and has some useful references. This is a book therapists could suggest to families to provide information from a patient's perspective as it provides more practical help than most, but I would recommend that they read it first.' -Physiotherapy Journal On November 7th 1994, Philip Fairclough fell fifteen feet from a ladder onto a concrete patio. The impact caused massive trauma to his head and the subsequent brain damage he suffered has radically changed his life. At first unable to dress himself, cross roads on his own or tell the time, Philip underwent an intensive course of rehabilitation and occupational therapy, which slowly restored many of the lost skills that he had once taken for granted. His account tells of the hurdles he faced and overcame while in residence at a rehabilitation centre, the difficulties of readapting to family life, and finally the emergence of his new vocation as a writer. Like most of us, Philip never expected that severe injury would happen to him - but from the first he decided not to give up. His courage, determination and the support of his family characterize this account, which interweaves his own story with practical information about brain injury. Members of the medical profession, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and counsellors will all find this account helpful and revealing - as will people affected personally by brain injury, and their families and friends. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. `This would be an excellent companion to an A-level or first year degree course or indeed anyone with an interest in psychology. The book aims to `tell people what psychology is about' and it does this in an extremely well structured and accessible fashion. It gives a good introduction to severaldifferent elements of the study of psychology and provides further reading for those wishing to gain a deeper understanding. As each chapter can be read alone it is also a useful reference tool to provide explanations of subjects and quick overviews of areas. Each chapter is written in a balanced way and allows the reader room for reflection.' -Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling & Psychotherapy `It is truly very difficult to describe books such as this, which through the use of clear and simple language achieve accessibility for those interested as long as they take account of the scientific style of the psychological terminology so well defined throughout its chapters As if this were not enough, at the end of every chapter the author presents us with a selection of fundamental books so that if we wish we can further our knowledge of each subject.' - European Journal of Psychiatry `This is an excellent book, and for anyone who is not a psychologist but would like to understand the basic concepts within its different fields, is difficult to better, given its size. The text is lucid, readable and provides both a good selection of references and some judiciously chosen further reading. The author consistently introduces the major concepts of each subject, and then goes onto discuss the recent developments in each field. The chapter on Biopsychology not only discusses the biological basis of nerve function but discusses sleep and the mind-body relationship in a cogent and helpful way to those needing a quick basis for further reading. The lack of illustrations anywhere in the text coming in the chapter on statistics. Having said that, the text itself reads in such a way - even the statistics chapter - that these are almost rendered unnecessary. A book like this is difficult to write, because no matter why is selected, someone will complain that there are gaps, but these are understandable. It would have been extremely helpful to have health psychology treated in the same way that the author treats other subjects, but given the plethora of texts on health psychology available these days, it's hardly surprising the author didn't cover this topic, and this is rather a grudging complaint. The publisher is providing a solid and growing range of titles, and the present author himself has authored a number of other texts which are of value to more specialised audiences. This book is ideal for professionals with little or no grounding in psychology, or those new to the subject, who need to know something about the field and its concepts. Excellent as an A Level background text or for other readers wanting to update their knowledge, this book should find a wide readership.' - Journal of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health This accessible book has a simple aim - to tell people what psychology is about. It presents a review of the key areas of the subject as it is traditionally taught, and provides the reader with an introduction to important concepts and findings within each of these. Armed with the information in this book, the reader should be able at least to make sense of most psychological topics. At the end of each chapter is a set of suggested further readings which will enable a more detailed exploration of the particular topic under discussion to be made. The book will be of interest to two groups of readers. The first comprises people who are new to the subject and simply want to know what psychology is. The second consists of those who want a general guide to an area but who wish to make up their minds on the details for themselves. Hence the basic information and arguments are explained, but details are not elaborated. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
