Many veterans have lived through unspeakable experiences. Then, on return home, they must deal with unwieldy bureaucracies. This has remained a constant from World War One until the present. Kate Blackmore examines the soldier's war on the Western Front in detail, looking in particular at trench warfare and the medical conditions it spawned. She then investigates the origins of the present veterans' system: how medicine became integral to cost-containment; how a particular attitude became entrenched in the repatriation bureaucracy; and how both of these factors profoundly affected the lives of veterans during and after the 'Great War'. Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels.

Many historians have written about â Anzacâ , especially in terms of â mythâ or â legendâ , but few have considered Anzac Day as a part of Australian culture. Numerous writers associate the 1915 Gallipoli landing with a nascent Australian consciousness or national identity, but no historian has outlined in book form the emergence of Anzac Day rituals in 1915 or the acceptance of a national â Debt of Honourâ .

Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels. 217 pages. Ever since Descartes there has been vigorous debate about the separation of mind and body, and of rational thought and feeling. Challenging the Divide argues against dualistic views and proposes a re-engagement and cross-fertilisation between the â sciencesâ (rational, supposedly dispassionate, thought) and â poetryâ (the arts, and felt thought and emotions). Contemporary scientists and poets offer their views on how both modes of thinking inspire and inform their work. Australian scientists and poets have contributed essays and poems, and the work of international writers such as Lewis Thomas, Miroslav Holub and Primo Levi is discussed. [Book Blurb].

In December 1914 Claude Morlet, a newly qualified doctor, set sail from Melbourne to do his duty for his Country in the First World War. After spending time in Egypt tending the wounded in Australian military hospitals, he got his wish to join the action and arrived in Gallipoli in September 1915 after the initial assault. He recorded his thoughts and observations in diaries and letters back home, many of which have survived, giving a first hand account of the action. Later in France, caring for the wounded under hazardous conditions, he was Mentioned in Dispatchesand awarded the DSO for his service in action. Returning from the war, he settled in Perth, married and established a successful practice as an ophthalmic surgeon. When war again broke out, he enlisted and served in the Middle East, was posted to Tobruk where he served throughout the siege. After the war he came home to his family and resumed his opthalmic practice.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Hot on the heels of Pomeroy, Castro's third novel Double-Wolf was also published in 1991. It takes as its premise the fact that Sergei Wespe, Freud's famous 'Wolfman' patient, was an aspiring writer, and adept at spinning tales. Was what he told Freud 'the truth' about his neurotic condition, or did he spin out an elaborate narrative to please Freud? If the latter, where does Freud's own 'narrative' or 'discourse', psychotherapy, stand?Based on research about the real Wolfman, Castro combines reality and imagination in a vivid tale that has the reading guessing: what is 'the truth'? At times salacious and at times outrageously funny, it questions the idea of the 'myths' that we consctruct to make sense of our world.
