SAS. spetznaz. mujahideen. CIA. ~ The British never fought the Soviet army, right? Wrong. In 1980, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher had taken over the leadership of the West and the Soviets had invaded Afghanistan; the most crucial battle of the cold war was about to begin. ln the high mountain passes of the north~west Frontier and the Hindu Kush, the CIA and its Western allies saw an opportunity to bring the mighty Soviet army to its knees. Their weapon: the Islamic guerrillas of the Afghan Mujahideen. Their agent: Tom Carew, a young ex~SAS soldier with a talent for 'black bag' covert operations and veteran of the wars in Dhofar and Northern Ireland. In the course of an extraordinary year, Carew, the first western agent to link up with the Mujahideen, led a series of daring initiatives inside Afghanistan. His account covers in extraordinary and revealing detail combat action against the Soviet Spetsnaz and Afghan mercenaries; reconnaissance missions leading to the installation of the first West~sponsored training camp for Mujahideen in Pakistan; and Carew's attempt to hijack an aircraft during a covert arms~buying mission. During these operations, Carew was accepted and befriended by the fundamentalist Mujahideen and became as close to them as any European infidel could ever get. In many ways he was a latter~day Lawrence of Arabia. Tom Carew later rejoined his unit. Wry, perceptive and sensitive, Jihad! is a fast~paced account of combat espionage and high adventure, against the backdrop of the last truly wild and lawless country on earth. It sheds unprecedented light on the sharp edge of the cold war and the conduct of special operations in the modern era.

Hard Back. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. 416 Pages Indexed. Bright orange endpapers. Dust jacket is in very good condition and flaps are taped together. Illustrated with maps and a 16 page center section of color photographs. Written by a man who is both an award-winning historian of the Highlands and Islands and a key figure in shaping the region's future development, this is an account of how the Highlands and Islands of Scotland evolved into the way they are today. But the book is not simply the story of humanity's millennium-long involvement with one of the world's most spectacular localities. It is also a contribution to the present-day debate about how Scotland - and Britain - should be organized. James Hunter's central contention is that the Highlands and Islands were most successful when the region possessed a large measure of autonomy, which turned places like Iona and Kirkwall into centres of European significance. That autonomy was destroyed, he maintains, by mediaeval Scotland's monarchy, by 17th-century Scotland's parliament and by the British politicians who inherited the Scottish state's unrelenting determination to ensure that inhabitants of the Highlands and Islands had no worthwhile control over their own destinies. The more recent history of the Highlands and Islands, in Hunter's opinion, has consisted mainly of attempts by the region's people to regain freedom and rights - including rights to land - of which they were deprived in the Middle Ages and afterwards. Today those attempts are succeeding and, this book argues, ought to be encouraged by Scotland's new government. If it is to do better by the Highlands and Islands than Scottish governments of the past, it will have to see that devolution of political power does not stop in Edinburgh. Contents in Nine Chapters: The Most Distant Dwellers on Earth, Born of a Noble Lineage, The Broad Loom of Slaughter, Children of Conn, No Joy Without Clan Donald, Moments When Nothing Seemed Impossible, I Never Did Witness such Wretchedness, Is Treasa Tuath Na Tightearna, and Wir Ain Aald Language.
