Three essays cover (1) the emergence of the codex and early Christian bindings, (2) the production of medieval ecclesiastical book covers fashioned from precious metals and enriched with gems, and (3) the development of early medieval leather bindings. Indexes: I. Binderies and Places of Binding II. Provenance: Patrons, Collectors, Owners III. Bookbindings before 1600 in the Morgan Library: A Preliminary List.
