Zustand: new. Jay Marshall's collection of magicana was legendary. On May 5th, 2007, selections from Marshall's collection were sold at public auction. The catalog -- 96 pages, perfect bound, including eight pages of color plates -- chronicles a small sampling of that legendary collection. Offered for sale were rare books, including Dean's Hocus Pocus; a choice selection of Houdiniana, including two scarce posters; and ephemera relating to and/or autographed by some of the outstanding conjuring lights of the last 100 years: Kellar, Thurston, Blackstone, Dunninger, LeRoy, Germain and many others. The auction was conducted at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. The auction was open to the public, but held in conjunction with the 38th Annual Magic Collectors' Weekend.
Zustand: New. Jean Hugard was one of the most influential magicians of the 20th century. He became a professional magician in his native Australia before coming to the United States where he performed in many venues, including his own theatre on Coney Island. He was the author, ghost writer or editor of nearly fifty books and pamphlets on magic and was the founding editor of Hugards Magic Monthly. This monograph covers his long career and includes a colored frontispiece, illustrations, a checklist of his publications and an index. About the Author James B. Alfredson is a co-compiler of a landmark bibliography of English language magic periodicals and the author of Newmann: The Pioneer Mentalist. He is a former editor of Magicol: the journal of the Magic Collectors' Association.
Zustand: new. Illustrated with photos, playbills and posters, many published here for the first time. Hardbound, 150 pages. Cutting Up Touches is the first book ever written on the history of exhibition pickpocketing. In it, David Avadon traces this light-fingered entertainment from its murky music hall beginnings to the largest showrooms in the world. He profiles Giovanni and Borra, the architects of stealing on stage. He spotlights Dominique and Ricki Dunn, who made emptying pockets hilarious nightclub entertainment. He explains the stealth and showmanship of a wide array of wallet snatchers. He explores the powerful subliminal emotions touched by each act of pocket thievery. And he shares the fascinating lore surrounding this street crime turned performance art.

Zustand: new. "I was born dead," asserts the first arresting line in The Life and Times of Augustus Rapp. Happily, the child recovered and went on to a lifetime of wandering showmanship in the villages of the middle west and the rural south -- a roving entertainer in quest of an audience. At the grand old age of eighty-nine Rapp gave those of us who care this amusing and curiously readable autobiography, an item of what is called Americana, if I ever saw one. And Guss Rapp was good, says Robert Parrish in his sympathetic introduction; he was "a wonderful magician and a delightful performer." He still is. A wealth of anecdotes and a selection of old portraits and playbills help to make this a uniquely interesting book. --Vincent Starrett in The Chicago Tribune.

Zustand: new. A 132 page deluxe clothbound edition, illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia, color plates, and a satin bookmark ribbon. Rameses the Egyptian Wonderworker was an illusionist of the Edwardian era. Born Albert Marchinski in Poland in 1876, he grew up in London in a distinctly middle class home. But as Rameses, he achieved financial and artistic successes beyond the dreams of most entertainers. His fast moving, exciting and colorful illusions took him to the stage of London’s prestigious Palladium eight times. In addition, he played England’s top theaters and made triumphant tours of America South Africa and Europe. The highlight of his career was perhaps an appearance on the very first Royal Variety Performance attended by The King & Queen of England. Yet despite his theatrical triumphs, it was the stage that proved Rameses undoing. Little has been written about Rameses’ life and magic despite his singular approach to illusions and a career most magicians would envy. Thanks to Chris Woodward’s diligent research, his story can now be told. Rameses the Forgotten Star tells a rags to riches story that ends back in rags that was heretofore unknown. Along the way, readers learn the secrets behind Rameses’ illusions (including his spectacular levitation), thrill at his theatrical conquests, and see how quickly that success slipped away. Award-winning author Chris Woodward is a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats, and Gold Star Member of The Inner Magic Circle of London.

Zustand: new. In a field dominated by men, one of the most successful and busiest magicians of a generation was also a woman. Dell O'Dell grew up in Kansas, and learned to love show business amidst the sawdust and spangles of her father's circus. She learned to entertain as a teenager, teaching herself to juggle, perform acrobatics, and work with animals. Eventually, she would go on to own her own circus, perform as a comedy magician in vaudeville, and finally find certified stardom as a headlining night club performer and television star. Half a world away, in Switzerland, Charles Carrer was learning many of the same feats of digital dexterity. He developed a polished, dapper, and amazing juggling act that took him on tours throughout the European continent, South American, and eventually landed him in America. It was there, in New York, that the two troupers met, married, and embarked on a partnership - both on and off stage - that has to be read to be believed. In the pages of Don't Fool Yourself, author Michael Claxton draws on first-person accounts, revealing research, and rich historical archives to paint humanizing and captivating portraits of Dell O'Dell and Charlie Carrer, remarkable entertainers whose lives were intertwined - as well as fascinating bygone eras of American show business. A quality 6 x 9" hardcover, 332 pages, illustrated with dozens of unpublished images. As a bonus, each book includes a Dell O'Dell Dancing Doll novelty!.

Zustand: fine, new. Written by Alfred Trumble and first published in 1882, Faro Exposed was a landmark book on America's favorite crooked card game. It explains the origin, rules, and history of Faro, as well as the sophisticated methods used by card cheats to beat the odds. Twenty years before Erdnase, Faro Exposed explained the riffle stacking and gaffed dealing boxes, along with countless other subterfuges and sleights used to "get the money" in a game that was, until the rise of poker, America's national pass-time. Among the techniques described are rough, sanded, rounded, and stripped cards; gaffed faro boxes; dodges with alluring names like "The Coffee Mill," "Squared Sights and Tie Ups," "Horse Hair," and sundry other card-sharping methods. The author sums up faro's crooked nature on page 47, "There is not in the United States to-day one single faro-banker who is willing and content to confine himself to the strict percentage of an honest game. They practice every trick, cheat, fraud, device, contrivance, skin and scheme known in to the 'trade,' save and except that which they themselves do not know. Nothing but the fear of detection will prevent them from taking every possible advantage of their customers." Despite its importance and focus, the book is virtually unknown today, due in part to the fact that only three copies have survived. Not even the Library of Congress owns a copy of the original work.) With an introduction by noted card expert Jason England. A deluxe hardbound volume, with 98 pages in sewn binding, a full-color recreation of the original wrapper and all text digitally re-screened and enhanced. Illustated with woodcuts. Limited edition of 500. New (fine) condition.

Zustand: new. David Solomon is one of the nation’s most prolific cardicians, having spent fifty three years seeking out, refining, and inventing the most interesting and fooling methods in card magic. A confidant of Ed Marlo, and a stalwart of the "Chicago Session" (with John Bannon and Simon Aronson), Solomon has developed his own style and reputation as a creator of superlative and cunning card tricks. Over the last ten years, he has published more than 100 tricks online, in print, and shared them via DVD. Now, he has compiled the best of them in this, his latest must-have volume. Solomon’s Secrets includes 50 card effects, among them nuanced performance effects, poker tricks, card matches, mental miracles, updated mathematical approaches, and personal takes on classic plots. Among the noteworthy effects explained are Solomon’s Simple Oil and Water, The Finger Print Trick, Folded Discovery, Matcho From a Shuffled Deck, Blah Day Clock, and Spectator Cuts U Count. The book's 208 pages are filled with detailed instructions, complemented by over 200 photos that clearly illustrate all sleights, layouts, and procedures. At the end of most effects, the reader is invited into “Solomon’s Mind,” to better understand the thinking behind each effect, as well as its development and the ideas which led to its creation. Solomon’s Secrets is an essential addition to any card enthusiast’s library, providing original, thought provoking material for performance repertoires or simply for the fun of it.

Zustand: new. Suzy Wandas came from the humblest of beginnings. Nothing about her entry into the world was auspicious, nor did it portend to her future as a star on the stages of Europe, England, or America. Instead, Jeanne Van Dyck was born in the back of a fairground wagon in Brussels in 1896. Yet in the male-dominated world of magic, under the stage name Suzy Wandas, her light - her star - shone as one of the brightest in the firmament. An innovative sleight-of-hand artist who developed and refined her own remarkable techniques, Suzy became one of the most revered and sought-after acts of her generation. Her rise to fame sometimes contrasted sharply with hard work and bitter poverty. Amidst the turmoil of two world wars and personal tragedies, her upward trajectory remained nearly uninterrupted. From fairground theater to the largest variety stages, she conquered every venue in which she performed. The Lady with the Fairy Fingers is the incredible true story of Suzy Wandas, a woman who persevered against a backdrop of cultural turmoil, international strife, family tragedy, and a male-dominated profession to achieve worldwide success on her own terms. It is also the history of variety entertainment in the twentieth century, a personal view of women's rights, and a story of true love and pure magic. Hardbound, 204 pages in full color, illustrated with never-before-seen posters, photographs, and ephemera. Edition limited to 750. Books ship the week of May 13th, 2020.
