Trade Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Hesch, Malria - Paintings (illustrator). First Printing. 26 Pages. No defects, marks, or stamps notedd. This is a warm and playful book to read over and over so as to savor the magical imaginations of two gifted artists. Real-life Santa Fe painter Maria Hesch (1909-1994) painted innocent narratives of her life as a young girl growing up along the river next to her grandfather's alfalfa field that linked the family to the nearby church. In this book the author imagines the story of the young Maria revealed in the paintings. She is a sensitive child, alive to the colors and shapes of her world, a child who makes of her solitary playtime the companionship of her budding artful imagination. She reminds us that children are the original artists. She recalls first stirrings as an artist when she lived with her widowed mother and next door to her Grandpa. It was from them that she learned the stories, traditions, and customs that she tries to portray in her paintings. Pat Mora is a poet and nonfiction writer of such books as House of Houses, a memoir, and Aunt Carmen's Book of Practical Saints.

Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 96 Pages. Light wear to covers and spine. Two inch crease at cover top corner that also affects many the followi on pages. Front cover is a bit looser at the glued binding than the remaining pages. The remainder of the book is tight. This volume of fifty masterpieces from the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe is the result of a collaboration between Norman A. Geske, Director of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska, and Ellen Bradbury, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of New Mexico. This is a selection of the best and at the same time represents a substantial piece of the history of painting in New Mexico. In a broader sense, it offers an illuminating review of American art history as it developed within the confines of a particular geographical region. This book is the result of a cooperative touring exhibit of the Mid-America region with the superb colletion paintings from the Santa Fe museum working with Sheldon Art Galery of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. These paintings went on tour while the Santa Fe Museum was undergoing a major renovation. Everything that characterizes modern art is represented - Realism and Surrealism, Impressionism and Expressionism, Cubism and Constructivism, the documentary, the poetic and the mystical. Accompanied by a foreword by Ellen Bradbury and an introduction by Norman A. Geske, the sixteen color plates and thirty-four black and white photographs truly reflect the light and color of New Mexico. It includes some history of the art and biographies of the artists represented.

Hard Back. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Editiion First Printing Stated. 248 Pages Indexed. Maroon boards with gold lettering on spine. As New. No defect noted. Dust jacket has light chipping at top edge and 1/8 inch chunk missing. Few figures in Southwestern history been as controversial as Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett. First president of the now named New Mexico Highlands University, founder of the Museum of New Mexico, the Institute of American Archaeology, and the San Diego Museum of Man, Dr. Hewett crowded more achievements into a lifetime than most men could ever hope to attain. Santa Fe, a lively cultural center in any time, full of activity in art, archaeology and politics during the early decades of the 20th Century. Dozens of well-known archaeologists owe their early training to Hewett, who served as Director of the Museum of New Mexico for more than 40 years. One of the early preservationists to recognize the irnportance of prehistoric sites in the Americas, he also helped save the Palace of the Governors from destruction. Today, the Palace stands in the heart of Santa Fe as an historic monument and tourist attraction of inestimable value. Hewett's victories were not always smoothly or easily won, however. Even his friends acknowledged his domineering nature. At various times, he figured in controversies with scientists, artists, politicians, business leaders, and the Old Santa Fe Association. The author was both an observer and a participant in the . goings-on of the Hewett circle. Her facts are drawn from private papers, as well as interviews with Hewett's intimates and colleagues. An unprecedented and intriguingly drawn portrait of the man, his friends, enemies, and their era in Santa Fe, this book captures the vibrant spirit of the time. Contents in 22 Chapters: Beginnings, Lewis Henry Morgan and Adolph Bandelier, Growing Up in Missouri, The Teacher Becomes an Archaeologist, Some Bridges Are Burned, The Doctoral Degree and the Fellowship Year , The Cliff Dwellings of Manitou Springs, The Old Palace, The School of American Archaeology is Established, The School Broadens Its Activities, Hewett Takes on the San Diego Exposition, Hewett Takes on the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, Santa Fe's Art Museum, Art Archaeology and Politics, Hewett and the Santa Fe Fiesta, Wrecked in the Desert, Santa Fe Fights the Cultural Colony, Opening Up the Indian Country, Shifting Loyalties, Emphasis on Writing, Looking Back for the Record, and Aftermath.
