Críticas:
"The remarkable second edition of...Black Women in America, which, like the first edition, is likely to serve as a reference tool in classrooms across the nation and around the globe."--Ebony "This landmark reference work is an essential purchase."--Booklist, Starred Review "Fascinating glimpses into black women's economic, social, and political contributions.... Impressive."--School Library Journal, Starred Review "A set that any library supporting African American or Women's Studies will find essential."--Against the Grain "Now in its second edition (the first was published in 1993), this three-volume reference is vibrant with stories of remarkable women--325 biographies--and discussion of topics pertaining to arts, culture, family, gender, law, occupations, politics, religion, science, and sports. The cumulative effect of such focus is inspirational and will surely spur scholarship and achievement among readers high-school level and above. The second edition features 150 new entries (for a total of about 560 entries) and revisions and updates to all that have been retained; some 600 b&w photos support the text. Each signed entry includes references, and a general bibliography of basic resources is also included. Editor Hine and a long list of contributing scholars have prepared a thoughtful and useful reference for a young field."--Reference and Research Library Book News "[A] significant revision of a standard reference source....Each well-written profile includes a portrait of the individual and a bibliography for further research. A singular resource."--School Library Journal, Curriculum Connections "Oxford University Press recently released a set that any library supporting African American or Women's Studies will find essential. Black Women in America updates and enhances the 1994 Dartmouth Award winning, two-volume set. It also reflects the growth of rader interest, as well as the expanding scholarship in this area over the past decade."--Against the Grain "Handsomely produced with over 500 illustrations and black and white photos....A definite choice for most public and academic libraries....There is nothing quite like it for thoroughness and comprehensive coverage of the Black woman's experience in America."--Against the Grain "Setting the historical record aright is no small task, but the more than 500 well-researched, exceptionally written....The seminal reference that shattered the silence about black women in America--now fully updated and revisedenhanced with dozens of archival photos, will compliment research in virtually any field. Summing up: Essential."--CHOICE "The second edition of this landmark reference work is an essential purchase for academic, public, and high school libraries, especially those with well-worn first editions. Because Black Women in America is such a valuable source...[L]ibraries should retain the first edition, perhaps in the circulating collection."--Booklist STARRED REVIEW "The essays offer fascinating glimpses into black women's economic, social, and political contributions, even at the grassroots level, and explore issues such as spirituality, domestic servitude, and mixed-raced identity in terms of how they have shaped history. A thematic outline includes biographical listings by occupation, and a chronology precedes an impressive list of contributors and a meticulous index. This comprehensive work will be appropriate for high school and public library collections."--School Library Journal STARRED REVIEW "Historian Hine had gathered a distinguished group of independent scholars, professors, and journalists to contribute to this valuable resource....Numerous sidebars reflecting the history and culture of black women enhance this rich text....Highly recommended."--Library Journal "This three-volume reference is vibrant with stories of remarkable women and discussion of topics pertaining to arts, culture, family, gender, law, occupations, politics, religion, science, and sports. Reseña del editor:
Winner of the Dartmouth Medal for Outstanding Reference Publication of 1994, the first edition of Black Women in America broke ground―pulling together for the first time all of the research in this vast but underrepresented field to provide one of the strongest building blocks of Black Women's Studies. Hailed by Eric Foner of Columbia University (for a Lingua Franca survey) as "one of those publishing events which changes the way we look at a field," it simultaneously filled a void in the literature and sparked new research and concepts regarding African-American women in history.

Since the first edition was published, a new generation of American black women has flourished, demanding this landmark reference be brought up to date. Women such as Venus and Serena Williams, Condoleezza Rice, Carol Mosley-Braun, Ruth Simmons, and Ann Fudge have become household names for their remarkable contributions to sports, politics, academia, and business. In three magnificent volumes, Black Women in America, second edition celebrates the remarkable achievements of black women throughout history, highlights their ongoing contributions in America today, and covers the new research the first edition helped to generate.
