This memoir portrays a Sansei, a 3rd generation Japanese American, born after World War II as she struggles to live within American culture, but finds herself to be bi-cultural.

In kindergarten, Sachi, her first name, changes to June, her middle name, as a declaration that she wants to be recognized as an American. However, as June grows up with Kibei-Nisei parents (born in America and raised in Japan), she draws closer to her Japanese roots. Marrying a Japanese national, June finds the differences even more astounding, experiencing cultural shock at times.

The book traces the roots of her husband's family, too, from his birthplace in Manchuria to his family's plight in returning to Japan during the Russian invasion. Also explored are the lives of her family members as internees in a relocation camp and their return to normal living following internment.

The memoir continues to touch on the relationships June has had with her older siblings and her children (including an adopted daughter) and, finally, understanding her mother. "SACHI - happiness" was written for June's son, a Yonsei and/or Nisei (4th or 2nd generation Japanese American), so that he would better know his grandparents' lives on both sides. Hopefully, this memoir will provide him with a better understanding of himself, as it did for his mother through the process of writing it.

For others, the book offers a fascinating glimpse into two distinctive cultures and what it means to be Japanese American in the post-WWII era.

About the Author:

Shortly after the Second World War, S. June Nagaya was born in Yreka, California in 1946. Her family returned to the Los Angeles area following their internment at Manzanar and Tule Lake camps and June was raised in Santa Monica. As an adult, June pursued a career in the securities business, becoming Operations Manager at Nomura Securities, Los Angeles, and retiring from Merrill Lynch, Las Vegas, in 2008 as a licensed Senior Associate. During those years her career was of utmost importance, but upon writing this memoir she discovered that her main priorities all along had been her family, close friends and the love she shared with them.

Thanks to her husband's transfers with Hitachi Kokusai, June has traveled widely. She has lived in Los Angeles, California; Torrance, California; Fort Lee, New Jersey; Tokyo, Japan; Huntington, New York; San Jose, California; and San Diego, California. She currently resides in Henderson, Nevada.

Completing this book was a long-awaited goal on June's bucket list. It began with notes from journals that she started writing ten years earlier. This is her first published work, and she hopes to continue writing about her experiences and thoughts ... always with much happiness.
