Reconnaissons franchement l'hégémonie de l'art français au dix neuvième siècle. Elle se maintient et s'exerce en Belgique comme ailleurs. Peutdêtre trouverait-on quelques maîtres exceptionnels échap pant à cette action; il est certain que notre jeune génération s'imprègne de l'exemple d'un lames Ensor, d'un George Minne, d'un Rik Wou ters et qu'ici la filiation avec l'enseignement français est moins discer nable. Il n'en reste pas moins que tout l'art contemporain doit ses plus précieuses leçons à Cézanne. Ses découvertes ont la vertu de lois essentielles et profondes les formes les plus récentes de l'évolution picturale en dérivent. On est cézannien sans le savoir, souvent même sans avoir vu Cézanne. Et sans doute le nombre des artistes qui, à la suite du maître d'aix, pénètrent les lois nouvelles, ou plutôt éternelles, pour en retirer la substance des oeuvres viables, n'est pas très grand. Mais en matière d'art, qu'est-cc que le nombre?
