En vérité, de grandes réformes sont à l'étude. Sans doute les trois sociétés retournées à l'isolement ont-elles contracté certaines manies de célibataires. Elles ont oublié le régime salutaire des concessions mutuelles. Dans la joie renouvelée de l'union rétablie, elles trouveront la volonté des sacrifices nécessaires. Et si les Artistes Français renoncent à leur curieuse habitude de couronner des lauréats, la réforme qu'ils auront ainsi réalisée sera d'une importance qu'ils ne soupçonnent point.
Rendant les artistes à la liberté de l'expression, cessant de les contraindre à se conformer, quinze ans, vingt ans durant, à une formule esthétique généralement désuète, le nouveau Salon gagnerait certai nement eu vitalité. Il évincerait sans nul doute les platitudes qui, dans l'état présent, encombrent les trois expositions annuelles.
