Excerpt from American Geology, Vol. 2: Containing a Statement of the Principles of the Science, With Full Inspirations of the Characteristics American Fossils: Also an Atlas and a Geological Map of the United States
Perturbations of the earth's crust are cotemporaneous with the changes in the organic world; they seem to mark the outgoing and incoming of the geologic periods. The systems are par ticularly indicated by physical changes. Hence the outgoing of organic forms are connected together as cause and effect with the perturbations of the earth's crust. We are not, how ever, to carry this doctrine too far; facts seem to show that many species survive a perturbation, and in historic times spe cies have become extinct from causes which can not be traced to perturbations of the earth's crust.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book argues that the United States' first sedimentary system, the Taconic system, existed well before previous assumptions. With this framework, the author illustrates the area that Taconic sediments covered, the locations in which it can still be found, and the different compositions of the material found in its strata. Through detailed investigation, the author aims to challenge previous knowledge of the oldest sediments and their relationship to metamorphic rocks such as granite and gneiss. The book is a significant contribution to the study of geology, particularly in the United States.
