Excerpt from Instructions for Mounting, Using and Caring for Disappearing Carriage: L. F., Model of 1896 for 12-Inch Guns, Models of 1888 and 1895
The emplacement on which this carriage is mounted is constructed entirely of concrete. Plate II shows the general design of the emplacement, although the shape of the rear of the loading platform varies somewhat with the location of the emplacement and the posi tion of the corridors leading to it. A circle of nine steps leads from the loading platform down to the platform surface on which the carriage is mounted. The counterweight well, around the top of which the base ring rests, is in the center of the platform surface.
The anchor bolts which hold the base ring in place are set in the concrete as the emplacement is constructed. The openings in which the wedges are afterwards set are made with molds and are the depth of the least height of the lower wedge.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This detailed and technical manual contains instructions for mounting and operating the 12-inch disappearing carriage model of 1896, designed for use with 12-inch guns, models of 1898 and 1895. The manual was published by the War Department and intended to guide the Regular Army and Organized Militia of the United States. It begins with a list of the principal parts of the carriage, including the base ring, azimuth circle and pointer, chassis, and traversing system. Each component is described in detail, along with its designated functions. The author emphasizes the precision and durability of the carriage, designed to handle the recoil and counter-recoil of the gun during firing, as well as its traversing and elevating capabilities. The manual provides valuable insights into the engineering and design principles of late 19th-century artillery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
