This detailed and technical manual contains instructions for mounting and operating the 12-inch disappearing carriage model of 1896, designed for use with 12-inch guns, models of 1898 and 1895. The manual was published by the War Department and intended to guide the Regular Army and Organized Militia of the United States. It begins with a list of the principal parts of the carriage, including the base ring, azimuth circle and pointer, chassis, and traversing system. Each component is described in detail, along with its designated functions. The author emphasizes the precision and durability of the carriage, designed to handle the recoil and counter-recoil of the gun during firing, as well as its traversing and elevating capabilities. The manual provides valuable insights into the engineering and design principles of late 19th-century artillery.
