This piece made a great noife, and drew him afterwards into a contro verfy: but, before that happened, he made a tour th1ough the Low-countries,,i1n company with two friends, and a ne phew of his, then a young fiudent. They fet out July y13, 1620, and a11iving at Middleburgh in Zealand, Gataker preached in the Ebngli fh church there; and in his travels confuted the Englifh Papifts in Flanders. His mother, yet al1ve, was apprehenfive of fome mifchief befalling him, as he as a known adve1fary to the Popifh cau1e, but he 1e turned with his companions fafe Aug. 14, having viewed the mod connderabl e places in the Low countries. During this fhort ﬂay he had an Opportunity of feeing the diftreffed fiate of the P1otei'rants in Holland, with which he was fo much affected, that he even thought it behoved the Englifh to g1 1vc up tome national interelis then difputed by them.
