This piece made a great noife, and drew him afterwards into a contro verfy: but, before that happened, he made a tour th1ough the Low-countries,,i1n company with two friends, and a ne phew of his, then a young fiudent. They fet out July y13, 1620, and a11iving at Middleburgh in Zealand, Gataker preached in the Ebngli fh church there; and in his travels confuted the Englifh Papifts in Flanders. His mother, yet al1ve, was apprehenfive of fome mifchief befalling him, as he as a known adve1fary to the Popifh cau1e, but he 1e turned with his companions fafe Aug. 14, having viewed the mod connderabl e places in the Low countries. During this fhort flay he had an Opportunity of feeing the diftreffed fiate of the P1otei'rants in Holland, with which he was fo much affected, that he even thought it behoved the Englifh to g1 1vc up tome national interelis then difputed by them.

During his relidence at Rome, he had, among other thin 5, obtained fome favours at that court for bilhop Nix Of' orwich, who on his return home, rewarded him with the archdeaconry of Norfolk in I 52 and this probably was the firft preferment he obtained in t e church. In reality, it muft be owned that his merit as a divine did not entitle him to any extraordinary expeéiations that way. As he made his firft entrance into bufinefs in a civil capacity, fo by the exercife of his talents in {late affairs theic were more im proved, which gave him an opportunity of rendering him {elf ufeful, and in a manner necefl'ary to the king; who in that perfuafion, {hortly after his arrival, took him from Wol fey, and declared him fecretar Of fiate. Thus introduced into the minifiry at home, be Ides the ordinary bufin'efs of his alike, and the large {hare he is faid to have had in the admirrifiration of affairs in general, he was particularly ad vifed with by the king in that point which lay neareft to his heart; and when cardinal Campejus declared that the caufe of the divorce was avoked to Rome, our fecretary was the perfon, who, in conjunétion with F ox the almoner, found out Cranmer, and, difcovering his opinion, introduced him to his majcily; which proved the rwos of the king's ex tricating himfelf out of that, till then thought, infuperable difficulty.
