But instead he got seduced into caring for the attractive, flamboyant outside world and never looked back on his theological training. A decent man himself, trying to do a decent job, he soon became as enraged at the Legion of Decency as at the most venal pornographic producer, and in the same arenas where he hunted heads, his own was often on the block. In very personal and historical terms, Vizzard reveals here for the first time the inside story of movie self-censorship, from the Will Hays days right up to the brouhahas that surrounded such modern films as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Blow-Up, and I Am Curious (Yellow). Although the book is a solid history of censorship in Hollywood over the years -and there's something here for those nostalgically hooked on the old-timers, as well as for the modern movie fans-its tone is never serious for very long because Vizzard, a born raconteur, has studded his narrative with one side-splitting anecdote after another. And even when he's talking with utmost seriousness, he is still marvelously entertaining. The entire story is told in full high gear.
