See No Evil: Life Inside a Hollywood Censor is a fascinating firsthand account of Hollywood's censorship system by Jack Vizzard, a longtime official of the Motion Picture Association of America's Production Code Administration. Published in 1970, this revealing memoir provides an insider's perspective on the enforcement of the Hays Code and the complex negotiations between Hollywood filmmakers, studio executives, and the industry's powerful censorship authorities. Vizzard recounts his experiences reviewing motion pictures and navigating the moral, religious, and political controversies that shaped American cinema during the Production Code era. His account explores the restrictions imposed on depictions of sexuality, violence, crime, religion, and social behavior, along with the creative strategies filmmakers employed to work within or challenge those restrictions. The book offers an especially valuable historical perspective on the transition from Hollywood's traditional Production Code to the modern film rating system introduced in 1968. Vizzard's experiences provide insight into the changing cultural standards and institutional pressures that influenced American filmmaking throughout the mid-twentieth century. An important primary-source account for students of cinema history, Hollywood censorship, the Hays Code, and the development of American motion picture regulation. This copy is the original 1970 Simon and Schuster first edition, first printing, as explicitly stated on the copyright page. It includes the original photographic dust jacket featuring distinctive filmstrip artwork and a portrait of the author on the rear panel.…

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. The Guardians of the Public?s Innocence are pretty well out of a job these days, which Is why it?s exactly the right time for this wickedly honest invariably raucous, and consistently fascinating tale to be told. Jack Vizzard has for many years been near the top command of the Hollywood Code Office, He came there under the legendary Joe Breen, fresh from Jesuitical training for the priesthood and ready to wrestle with the devil from the beginning. But instead he got seduced into caring for the attractive, flamboyant outside world and never looked back on his theological training. A decent man himself, trying to do a decent job, he soon became as enraged at the Legion of Decency as at the most venal pornographic producer, and in the same arenas where he hunted heads, his own was often on the block. In very personal and historical terms, Vizzard reveals here for the first time the inside story of movie self-censorship, from the Will Hays days right up to the brouhahas that surrounded such modern films as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Blow-Up, and I Am Curious (Yellow). Although the book is a solid history of censorship in Hollywood over the years -and there's something here for those nostalgically hooked on the old-timers, as well as for the modern movie fans-its tone is never serious for very long because Vizzard, a born raconteur, has studded his narrative with one side-splitting anecdote after another. And even when he's talking with utmost seriousness, he is still marvelously entertaining. The entire story is told in full high gear. Often very vulgar and frequently hair-raising, See No Evil is likely to cause a near-riot on the West Coast and is sure to be talked about everywhere. All orders shipped protected in a box. This book includes a card stating that it is an advance copy for review purposes. Book.…
