This volume offers a balanced, readable, and logical analysis of the problem of global sustainability. Providing an overview of ecosystem sustainability, the authors introduce the concept of complex adaptive systems, a new discipline that is transforming our understanding of the ecological and socioeconomic networks that shape our world. Bridging theory and practice, the authors link analysis to a program for change. They explain why the transition to a more sustainable way of life means abandoning the search for simple solutions and adopting a systems perspective in which problems and solutions are multidimensional, dynamic, and evolving. The authors argue that macroeconomic policy is the key to the transition and that an agenda for fundamental regulatory and fiscal reform must be combined with a new framework for decisionmaking.
