Críticas:
-This book is a welcome addition to the comparative literature about human rights, women's rights, and family law. Professor Crotty believes that family law which regulates marriage, divorce, inheritance, and reproduction often creates significant differences in the legal status of men and women. She further believes that these differences are wrong and that gender equality should be the ideal. Her research combines theoretical rigor, careful measurement, and a sound research design to explain why the size of this 'gender gap' varies from nation to nation. Certainly, her work constitutes an important contribution to the relevant scholarly literature. What is even more surprising is that Professor Crotty has made her book suitable for the college classroom as well by avoiding unnecessary technical jargon and including stimulating questions for classroom discussion at the end of each chapter. Her book would be useful in classes about public policy, human rights, research methods, and women and politics.- (David L. Cingranelli, Political Science Department, Binghamton University)

Reseña del editor:
This book explores a fascinating subject; the relationship between women's rights under family law and their overall status. Since it regulates marriage, inheritance, and reproduction, family law makes the personal political. This text examines changes in family law that occurred between 1980 and 1995 in sixty-four different nations. It illustrates how public policies that relate to everyday life affect women. Because this text integrates gender politics and policy analysis, students in women's studies and in public policy courses will find it valuable.
